PLANETS CLIP
Two of today’s hard trance pioneers, The Jon the Baptist {Weymouth, England} & DJ Chuck-E {Cardiff, Wales} connection started in the Summer of 2005, all though between them both they have over 20 years DJ'ing and producing experience.
Today, Chuck-E is known as Wales' Number 1 hard trance DJ. But It was 10 years ago that he started his DJ'ing journey, & in this time he has co-promoted several organizations including Viberation, Hardcore Explosion, Trancefusion & Panic Room. As well as being the resident DJ for these he has gained many residencies, & rotational residencies elsewhere including GBH, Breathe, MGK, Hostile, Xtreme, Devils Heaven, Ludicrous and Stimulate to name but a few. A former winner of the national PYP DJ competition, Chuck-E 1st caught the eye of Ripsnorter head honcho, Martin Pod, back in 2002. 2 years later, he was to headline his event playing back to back with the internationally renowned DJ, Radio 1's DJ Kutski.
Keeping you back up to date, Chuck-E has worked, and have been a regular at some of the UK's finest underground hard dance events including Bionic, Slammin Vinyl, Tranzaction, Ripsnorter, North, Addiction in Scotland, & The Fresh Clubbing Tour in Ireland. He also Co-owns the Intolerance Recordings label with Mars W.
His production partner is none other than Jon the Baptist- who is 1 of the most respected and very best producers on the circuit. Most of his biggest hits are well known to be on the Future Sound Corporation label, but as well as those monster hits, he has remixed for hard trance kings Alphazone, and has his work played by the who’s who of trance such as Judge Jules, Dave Joy & Scot Project. Together there recent work has gone out on the mentioned Future Sound Recordings label owned by the Trance Generators in Italy, and Chuck-E's own Intolerance imprint.
Jons first release was on UK label 2XS Recordings, a sub label of Alien Trax, which eventually led him to be signed to Italian Based label, Future Sound Corporation. Also co-writing and mastering the projects 'THE ELITE' and 'PRO-T.O.N.', Jon's first hit release was 'Neutron' and 'Insomnia'. Since Jons signing to FSC he has featured on 8 of their last 14 releases, including various remix requests and alias's. All of Jons FSC work has recieved a massive amount of airtime across the globe, and has featured on many leading Hard Trance compilations.
Also working under the alias 'JTB', Jon has had releases and remixes on Club Quake, Skywarp & Sectioned Recordings to name a few...
2007 have already seen them on remix duties for Nish', with 'Talk To Me' set release this August 2007 on Harderground Records in Japn!! Future work in progess will soon feature on Dave Joy’s Joy Ride label (In the form of ‘Eclipse’ by French out fit Karybde & Scylla ) And once again, the home labels of Future Sound Corporation, and Intolerance Recordings. With Jon set to commit all future hard trance production & remix work to the JTB & DJ Chuck-E projects, the future of the hard uplifting trance has its life force here!

Jon the Baptist Chapter 1
MASSIVE TRAX INTERVIEW
1.. Ok from the beginning, How and when did you guys get into the Dance music scene?
Chuck-E: Christmas time 1992 I was listing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller on my walk man (Owww Yee Hee) I think I was doing the moonwalk on the kitchen floor (Chamone). I didn’t turn in to werewolf but I did the best thing that I have ever done in my life, and that was accept the gift from my cousin of a Carl Cox tape, that I think was from Fantazia. The all time classic ‘Edge 1 compounded’ was the very 1st hardcore tune I had ever heard and I thought ‘How cum I have never heard music like this before?’ I can remember switching off the Nirvana tape or CD that was playing on the main house system at my Nan’s Christmas party (and no, it wasn’t hers, she’s more of a Gabba Gran) and playing the Carl Cox tape about 7 or 8 times in a row, Loving it! After being educated by my cousin on the whole shindig, I would soon start collecting hardcore and drum’ n bass tape packs from Dance Paradise, Dreamscape, Dance Planet, Amnesia House etc.. And after hanging out in Cardiff’s dance record store Catapult, talking shit for hours on end, I eventually got to go to my 1st rave at the tender age of 14 (which was 2 years later) with Cally from Cally & Juice in Sunny Porthcawl for Southern Style Exposure. Now I feel old. Time moves on so quickly.
JTB:I started listening to dance music during my early school days, around 94. Listening to & DJing hardcore. I kept with it until around 98 until hard trance started taking over for me! I started producing in 99 and been flat out on cubase since!
…………………………………………………… ..
2. What made you decide on your stage names?
Chuck-E: The DJ name came from the old skool horror movies, Childs Play, I was a big fan of horror films when I was a kid, (even though these days they just spin me out, must be age catching up with me) and, it’s a silly story really, But what happened was, we were in an English class in about 1993/4 and instead of listening and following the boring book, I ended up Drawing a comic strip of ‘Chucky’ the killer doll from the films, (Because we had watched it the night before) murdering 1 of the school idiots who was disliked, the teacher took it off me when he eye balled me creating my master piece, and read it out in front of the class, “Hi im Chucky”, tried to embarrass me, but I was quite proud, the rest of the class loved it, and the name stuck with me, then I took away the ‘Y’ and added the ‘E’ for obvious reasons, to coincide with the then ‘Rave’ scene I was involved with. It can mean many things these days though, depending on who is asking, Do it stand for the named drug, or do Chuck-E mean… “Chuck away the ‘E’ don’t do drugs” That's up to you!
JTB: I was sitting with a group of close friends 1 day and some 1 randomly decided that ‘Jon the Baptist’ would be a good stage name for me, and the names stuck ever since simple as really, no biblical crazy stories or horror films here. JTB is obviously the initials of Jon the Baptist, the ‘Jon the Baptist’ name is signed to Future Sound Corporation when we write original productions, so the ‘JTB’ persona is used for productions out side that label. So on flyers, posters, remixes and Future Sound Corporation material its Jon the Baptist & DJ Chuck-E. Elsewhere, its JTB & DJ Chuck-E.
…………………………………………………… ..
3. We have recently seen the release of the 3rd Intolerance Recordings record, and also your 2nd release as a duo on the much loved Future Sound Corporation label. What are your future plans, and what else is on the way production wise?
Chuck-E: Basically, we want to keep the same thing going with Intolerance, and push the hard and uplifting European sound from here in the UK. We have a great label manager in Mars W, he is open to everything and any ideas we have, and will also be joining us for the next release. We will be doing some thing a little different in the next few weeks with 1 of our projects and have a few ideas that we want to test out, something a bit harder & darker that we have had in our heads for months, but have been tied up with other projects that couldn’t use this idea, and something else ill keep under wraps for now.
JTB: As far as other projects go, we are remixing for DuMonde, Dave Joy’s Joy Ride label which is our next job, and of course there will be some big tunes on Future Sound Corporation, and the next 1 should be about in March or April time. We have a few remixes in the pipe line. We have just remixed a tune called ‘Sunrise’ for Tube Tonic & Shandar, and that also has remixes from DJ Dean & Marty Somville, that also should be out in March.
....................................
4. What do you guys think of the current hard trance scene?
Chuck-E & JTB: There’s a lot been said and questioned about the hard trance scene over the past few years, big name producers have and come and gone, or set out to explore a new direction, which is all fair enough, but the music its self is still rocking, and it go’s off just as much now as it ever did in the clubs. The variety is huge, and there are so many different types of hard trance right now, there should be some thing for every hard dance lover. Our main, and favorite style of European hard trance was always the dominant force in the hard trance scene that most people will know us from, and with the likes of Reverb, Krammer, Scot Project etc.. ‘Leaving’, or changing there ways, I think there was a big panic. Its true that there isn’t quite as much of this particular sound of the same levels as quality as there was in say, 2002, but as for the big picture, our selves, Synthetic, Dave Joy, Alphazone, Megara & Lee, Tube Tonic & Shandar, FJ project, Ralph Novell, all still produce or push this sound, with new ideas, The hard trance sound in the South West is still loved with events like Atmosphere run by Major Tom and Wragg, and Resistance run by Gazzy B, The Firesky lot all play a big part, Wales' loves the hard trance sound and has some hot young producers including Sully, Australia is still hot for the music, and then on a diferent tip there’s also Uberdruck, Tommy Pulse and the Slideout side of things, the versatile sounds of Vandall & Max Savietto, the techy music makers like Kamui, Scot Project, and then for those who are in to the ‘UK’ sound, we have big names of Dark By Design, Australia's Steve Hill, Technikal, Phil York, aswell as the Kevin Energy & Sharkey nrg side of things! There are loads of names I haven’t mentioned, & loads of new producers like Nick The Kid (who’s been spinning hard trance for years & also runs Hindsight), and a few more starting to get recognition so I think the hard trance scene is very much alive and well.
…………………………………………………… ..
5. OK, We have to ask….CD or vinyl?Chuck-E & JTB: We have to say both. If you asked us at the beginning of the so called summer, Id have said vinyl all the way, there’s so many up’s and down’s for both sides of the argument that people have read about time and time again and we don’t need to go in to them all, but I haven’t played a record for a good few months! Basically, for me as a DJ right now the up’s of CD’s have started to out weigh the downs, Easier to carry, Cheaper in so many different ways, and the best thing, you can test new productions fresh from the studio, we play 95% of our own stuff, and are not costing any body any thing, so I feel its fair. If I was an up & coming DJ playing only other peoples tunes, and learning the ways id defo say vinyl, and I think we should try and make the vinyl ‘art’ last as long as possible. CD’s just aren’t the same either; remember the days of getting a box full of new 12” in the post to play about with? (Baybeee) Good times. File sharing has become a thorn in the side of music as a whole, not just dance music, but our scene is so small compared to that of the main stream that its finding it hard to cope, and piracy has killed off a lot of small businesses & I would advise people NOT to share, we all know people who do it, and I think unless its costing you, and you are by effected by it, then it doesn’t matter as much so it will continue until vinyl, unfortunately is no longer playing a part in our scene.
…………………………………………………… ..
5. What are the best and worse things about the hard scene at the moment?
Chuck-E:My personal worse things are File sharing, Ignorance, and of course politics, Oh & I hate hardstyle but thats not 'wrong' as such.!! In the scene Professionally tho, Industry made names, where people come out of nowhere who have done fuck all for the scene and get thrust in to ‘front row’, Crap MC’s, and the ‘who you know not what you know’ scenario.
JTB: I agree with Chuck-E’s choices for the worse things, especially ignorance. There are a lot ignorant people, DJ’s, promoters, and I don’t see the need for it. Theres people in the scene now with bad reputations and its so clear to see why! We could mention the political side of things, but I would rather not, I don’t feel the need too. Like Chuck-E says, File sharing has become a constant problem & that’s defiantly something that could be labeled as ‘The worse thing about the scene’
Chuck-E: I think the best thing about the scene is definatly the people who go out each weekend and the ever lasting love for the harder edged sound. There the people who count most of all. There’s so much to choose from these days, and so many different DJ’s to go out and see, at so many different events!. People love the music,
JTB: Its great that people love to go out and pay to hear their fav tunes being played by there fav DJ’s in a club environment, I think that the main love is for the producers of their fav tunes. You can be a DJ all you like, but I think it can only be taken so far, you have to be producing the sound that you stand for not just playing other peoples records, any body could do that with the right marketing system behind them. Its all about the music and we love what we write, and love playing them to loving crowds!
…………………………………………………… ..
6. Chuck-E, What is the best thing about working with Jon? &. Jon, What is the best thing about working with Chuck-E?
Chuck-E: At he moment, I think he’s the best hard trance producer on the planet, and from the very 1st day he invited me down, and we wrote ‘Intolerance’ it was like he was reading my mind, and it was so easy and exciting getting my point across to him of what I wanted to do, he shares all the same views and when we write tunes, we are often speaking out the same idea’s at the same time. Apart from the professional side, we get on great, he is such a nice guy (Both he and Mars as any body who knows them will tell you) and he’s always up for the banter, we don’t go hungry as he’s a great cook, and is known as the BBQ King in our circle. Apparently, when he’s naked he’s known as the 8th wonder of the world, But I gotta tell ya, I haven’t seen any evidence of this so far. He supports Man Utd though, shame.
JTB: His amazing micro waved Ginsters mix pasties and crisp brunches never cease to amaze, and with him being in the army you never have to feel threatened when out and about in ruff clubs, how ever, we are always loosing him with all that camo gear on. He is 1 of the best and most enthusiastic DJ’s I know, every body who knows him will tell you of his passion for what he does, I love him. (Takes off his wedding ring). But lets be serious for a minute, me and chuck are on exactly the same wavelength musically which is really important. As he's already said, we're often thinking the same thing. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the work he does to promote us in the week. He is defiantly 1 of the hardest workers in the scene. The support he has given me is second to none. I think we make a perfect team, we are now a permanent fixture together, & all our hard trance releases and big gigs will be done as a duo… and the most important thing is, we're top mates. I can’t do the whole music thing as a business - using, abusing, hiring and firing. For me it's about doing something i enjoy, and doing it with my friends!
…………………………………………………… ..
7. What are your 3 favorite JTB & Chuck-E productions (If you HAD to choose)?
Chuck-E: 1) Intolerance, 2) Magic, 3) A new Hope
JTB: 1) Il Futuro, 2) Intolerance, 3) A new Hope
…………………………………………………… ………………
8. What do you do after a gig?
Chuck-E: Well, Ha Ha, 3 to 5 day benders were always what used to happen, its only been in the last 18 months or so that I have calmed down, and any free time I get, I spend doing ‘normal’ things with my girlfriend Rachael, and any weekends we have off we will be in the studio for the majority of it. I don’t really miss the hardcore partying to be honest, the best days of my life, probably yes, but I’ve seen so many people come and go, and met new friends & people alike, I know its always there if I ever ‘feel the need’ I think when you have so many good times with a certain group of people, and then things & people change, and different people come along, it causes a bit of nostalgia amongst the group. We still have great times, but with out the work, there would be no party! Now days its more about the music and us, rather than the music then the party.
JTB: Yep, good choice of words. I’m married now and that takes up a lot of time, as Chuck says we spend all the time we possibly can in the studio, and aim to do twice as much this year. After a gig a party is cool some times, but its nice to get ‘work’ done at any possible moments we have.
…………………………………………………… ………………
9. What other interests do you have outside dance music?
Chuck-E: I love my films & football, going to the cinema and renting DVD’s, I’m a big sci fi geek, I love star wars, Heroes, Blade, X-Men, the 4400, and vampire films like ‘The Lost Boys’! I love Family Guy and I’m a massive Arsenal fan, and used to attend quite regular, but haven’t been up for a year, shame full I know but Im busy the weekends! I also have an African market stall; Do u want to buy a gorilla hand ash tray?
JTB: I also have an African items ebay shop, but I also like gardening, loosing my self in a good book, warm baths with salts, pipes, slippers, and cooking up a mean ass BBQ. As said, Im also now married to my wife Helen so spend any time out of the studio with her.
…………………………………………………… ………………
10. What have you got lined up for 2008?
Chuck-E & JTB: We had this question a couple of times already this year, as most know, Jon got married last year, (for those girls ready to throw them self’s off a cliff, don’t panic, Vandall is available for romance, [email protected] ) so we had to postpone our trip to Australia, so hopefully we will get that back on the go. We have a few things coming up with Archie over there, who Is 1 of the DJs from the Central Energy mix compilations. We are set to make our Frantic debut at the end of February headlining the ‘Show case room’ so looking forward to that, aswell as making our Atmosphere debuts (as a duo) & featuring on some of the Intolerance tours and events. We played Ireland, Holland and Scotland in 2007, and would love to re visit these countries as well as (we hope) to play the pending gigs we have in Germany, Switzerland, Finland and Australia.
