Innovation (Industrialization)
Manchester invented the modern industrialized city. Asa Briggs called it "the shock city of the age": where ideas of society and economy, how people lived and worked, all turned upside down. This was not done without controversy: The Luddite* riots of 1811-15 saw laborers attack factories and destroy the machines that were replacing them. Other workers’ movements followed, giving birth to unionized labour as we know it today in the West. Women’s emancipation also followed in the wake of the agricultural inventions that freed them from producing offspring, previously so crucial to farm labour.
The Industrial Revolution was a two-stage affair: 1st- 1770s-1860s steam power, telegraph, cotton gin and steel plow. 2nd – 1870s-1910s – telephone, internal-combustion engine, lightbulb, germ theory of disease, radio and movies.

Submissions Wanted !!
We want you to be a part of the biggest indoor screen installation in the world. The point of I-REZ is to pose questions about global matters that affect us all and look for answers – in the community, in technology, in our use of media and in ourselves.
We are embedding thousands of clips into the main images which are all based on a storyboard exploring global issues and making connections with Manchester – the first "Modern" city – where the event takes place.
We want your stories and ideas to be part of the video mosaic that tells the wider story about our world – so please submit !
Imagine youtube x500 set to the beats of some great DJ’s ….
Please read more about the event here and on Manchester Festival site and have a look at our submissions guidelines.
Then go get or make your clips and submit them, alerting the FRIEND that is closest in theme to your submission.
