About Afro-Venezuelan Music
The tradition of Afro-Venezuelan music is a rich, powerful and original expression. It has its origins in the music of Africans taken to Venezuela as slaves, between the XVI and XVIII centuries during Spanish colonial rule. An oral tradition, this music is a unique mix of ancient African music and rituals with Catholic festivities, mainly performed by ordinary village people with percussion instruments and collective choral chants. The main rhythms present a combination of binary and ternary pulses, creating very rich polyrhythmic effects.
Afro-Venezuelan music is divided into three main traditions, localised in three different regions all along the country’s large northern coast: the Barlovento coast, the Central Coast, and the Southern banks of Maracaibo Lake, in the West.In the Central coast the cumaco is the most extensively found drum. It consists of an about two-meter hollowed-trunk with one skin placed horizontally over the floor. This drum is played by two drummers, one hitting the skin, alternating fist and extended fingers for lower and higher pitched sounds respectively. The second drummer is placed at one side of the instrument, making use of wooden sticks or laures, to hit its body. The cumaco is usually played accompanied by a second drum. In the Central Coast tradition this is the tambor blanco (white drum) – sometimes also referred as clarín -, a two-skin metallic drum played with the hands. Cumaco and tambor blanco constitute an ensemble, played during the festivity of San Juan (Saint John). This kind of ensemble plays mainly three styles: golpeado, corrido and sangueo. The Barlovento coast is divided into sub-regions, often with different drums involved, and therefore associated with different kinds of ensembles and drumming styles (such as Fulía and Culo e.. Puya). In this area the cumaco is called mina, which accompanied by a smaller version called the curbata, and constitute the Conjunto Mina. The drum music from the south of Maracaibo lake is played with the Chimbangueles drums, an ensemble of seven drums divided in two groups, macho and hembra (male and female). The drums are about one meter high, are carried by the performer with a strap, and they are played during the procession for the festivity of San Benito. Invariably, the ensemble plays six styles, each one corresponding to a stage in the procession.
Afro-Venezuelan Music and Vamos Pa’Lante

Despite having been taken into the main urban centres of the country, and being fused with other popular genres and more “underground” instrumentation, the Afro-Venezuelan genres of music remain mostly unknown outside of the country. In our compositions, we make use of selected drum patterns from this tradition in combination with urban contemporary popular genres like rock, rap and electronics, with the aim to create original music, but also in the hope of contributing to the propagation of the Venezuelan cultural heritage, its preservation, and its development into new and creative forms.
