About Me

Slight change of profile, the last one was a bit too indepth about me, so let's just keep it music based now. I taught myself Double Bass (with the encourangement from good friends Phil and Pony who now play in Marching Orders & the Ten Fours respectively) back around 1992 (a late starter) and they suggested we start a band (even though at that stage I couldn't play a damn note). I guess my main passion for playing in the early days was the influence of those Rockabilly greats such as Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Burnette, Johnny Cash and yes, even Elvis' Sun Sessions, then I discovered the Stray Cats (got a soft spot for Neo-Rockabilly still) who took that sound and gave it a wilder, modern edge for that time and new I wanted to be on stage slappin my thing (the Bass I mean..... get ya mind outta the gutter.)THE PSYCLONES Period:
Hence, my first band was born back on the Gold Coast, Queensland (Aust)....the 'Psyclones'. We were a four piece with attitude, big hair, big bass, big sound...well sort of, I was just learning to play then so my 'slappin' wasn't as frantic as it could have been but we did o.k. Covered some European bands and even began writing our own tunes.

THE SLINGSHOTS Saga:
Anyway, reality kicked in... after all we were living on the Gold Coast, 'surfers heaven' and with the techno and house pumping out at the Nightclubs who the hell were we supposed to play to? Know one quite got the whole "Psychobilly" thing, so we went through a few changes over the years (and about 5 or 6 lead guitarists and two drummers) and we all dug the Customs, Rods, Bikes and most of the 'roots' music so it ended up more of a mix between traditional Rockabilly, Neo-Rockabilly with a touch of Psycho and some good old Garage/Swamp Rock feels.....even had a name change, the SLINGSHOTS (we also dig those crazy dragsters from the early 60's).

We shared some highlights over about 8 or 9 years as the Slingshots. Got to release our 'one and only' 5 track EP which was a pioneer of independantly released EP/CD-Roms with a Video Clip included at the time. Played some great festivals in Brisbane, legendary venues on the Gold Coast like the popular PLAYROOM (we played the second last weekend there before they demolished it.....Corporate BASTARDS!).

Played support on the Gold Coast & Brisbane with one of our favourite bands, Southern Culture On The Skids back in 1998. The Psychobilly/Neo tour that covered Queensland and New South Wales back in 1999 called the 'Nitrobilly Tour'.Also had a few years off the Rockabilly tracks and tried my hand at something different, a band called THE RAILS. I was spotted during a Slingshots gig by these two guys who were playing around town doing Irish/Pop/Folk-style tunes and was asked to jamm with them playing Double Bass, they then found a full 'Rock' drummer who was influenced by main stream acts like Ilanis Morriset, Pearl Jam and the like and we somehow formed a band. It was a very electic mix but for some reason it just worked, we played many shows performing alot of Dom & Will's original material until one day, everyone just decided to go their own way, a great experience though.

Current status, HANK'S JALOPY DEMONS:
Gold Coast lifestyle was not for me anymore and packed up to move to Melbourne, Victoria (Aust) during 2000. Made quite a few new friends who seem to share a lot of common interests and eventually found some like-minded musos. I decided to hang the Bass up for awhile though, after the move interstate (for about 18 months) then couldn't stand not playing any longer. Eventually I was asked to jamm here and there with a few bands and ended up going back to the roots of Rockabilly and joined a great local Melbourne act, HANK'S JALOPY DEMONS.

My other interests or acheivements include managing a great kickass band from Sydney, the CASINO RUMBLERS for the last 3 years, but I've handed the reigns over to the lovely Miss Holly Newton of TRASHVILLE so go check them out at www.casinorumblers.comHelped inspire the recent Burlesque revival that has taken off here in Australia recently with originally managing HiBall Burlesque in it's infancy around 2001/02.Organised various events/tours....
- the first known Australian Psychobilly/Neo Rockabilly tour in 1999, "NITROBILLY" with 4 bands in Qld and 4 bands in NSW.
- the largest Psychobilly event of it's kind here in Australia, OUT OF THE COFFIN, that included 8 local & interstate bands, Burlesque troupe and DJ held on Halloween in Melbourne, 2003
- Various artwork created for festivals, CD covers, T-shirt designs for bands, etc.
...so there you have it, me in a nutshell really.
Oh, and most recently....I had the opportunity to perform the last 3 shows of the Slim Jim Phantom & Darrel Higham Australian & New Zealand tour as Bassist. I took over the duties from Mr Dave Bean (of the Casino Rumblers) as he had other commitments, and what a ball! It was a blast performing to such enthusiastic crowds both in Brisbane (Aust.) and the two New Zealand shows in Nov 2006. Here is some video footage taken at the Kingsarms in Auckland, New Zealand.
Thanks Jim!

My Interests

I dig most things from the 40's through to 60's (yeah, even some current stuff). Cars are a number one fav.... Customs, Rods, Muscle Cars, Old Bikes especially Triumphs, BSA's, the 1957 Harley Sportster a sweet ride too. I've also got a soft spot for those sleek wooden Chris Craft Speedboats from the late 40's to 50's, you know, the type you would see cruisiing the Riviera with some hot foreign babe, scarf in the hair behind the two piece windshield and white steering wheel.

Of course, I love my Double Bass. Wouldn't mind an early 50's electric hollow bodied bass to have as a matching set. Tattoo's are another fav, never have enough time or money though, only have 3 of them at the moment. I dont' want to be covered from head to toe but a few more would be nice. The usual collecting stuff is always good, retro furniture, records, PinUp memorbilia, Tiki items and of course I'm a big Burlesque fan too, started collecting early items of that over the last year or so.

Dig photography, although I own a nice Digital, Kodak Z740. Like travelling as much as possible, even if it's just interstate. I love the Tropical Island scenario and can always do more American Road trips of course. I have created alot of my own artwork in the past, I don't seem to get much time anymore though....maybe I'll go back to painting, some sculpture or just laying down some pencil work one day. Dabble with a bit of website creation but just for my own personal projects, nothing flash.

And it goes on and on and on.....

.....oh yeah, I'm also a big fan of early PinUp photography and Burlesque from the late 40's thru to the early 60's .....and of course, a big fan of my wife, she is one of Australia's current traditional Burlesque revivalists, Miss Lilly Licqueur.Oh, and I've just discovered a new love/appreciation for Vintage electric Basses as I now own a great little '61 Kay 'Value Leader' Bass.

I'd like to meet:

.....anyone who doesn't shit me really. ;) hahahaha...

Music:

HANK'S JALOPY DEMONS Traditional Rockabilly of course.... alittle Western Swing but not too much country though (I know, sounds a bit contradictory?), some early R&B, Psychobilly, good old Swamp Rock (ala S.C.O.T.S.), early 60's Surf Instrumentals, some early Jazz / Bebop, a bit of Flamenco guitar, a dash of Zydeco throw in some crooners like Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra and don't forget the ladies like Julie London, Sarah Vaughan, Elle Mae. What the hell, give me some Ska as well and a few modern day artist like Metallica, the Offspring, Green Day, Chris Isaak which also includes artists the likes of Big Sandy & the Fly-Rite Boys too... and there ya have it........ a totally mixed bag of lollies!!!

Movies:

Anything good mainly....... early B Grade SciFi / Horror is always good for a laugh. Futuristic themes or a damn good comedy gets my attention.

Television:

Miss those corny 70's sitcoms like the Brady bunch, Happy Days, M.A.S.H. Oh..... I really miss the GOODIES, YOUNG ONES, KENNY EVERETT on ABC TV.

Books:

Hmmmm..... don’t get much time for these, to many other projects on the go.

Heroes:

My wife, yeah I know what you're saying right now but do I care...nup!
