K's FULL BIO:
With 20 + years in the music game, Big K., one half and the K. of K.O. Productionz, is a grammy-nominated songwriter, producer and seasoned industry veteran. From DJin' on W.P.G.C. 95.5 (D.C.) on the original LIVE IN THE DEN WITH BIG TIGGER show w/ T. Chuck, to writing and producing songs for the likes of gospel diva YOLANDA ADAMS f/ TONY TERRY, to remixing records for MONICA f/ BIZ MARKIE, and SCARFACE f/ TUPAC, to producing and rappin' on JOHNNY P's club smash "Look Good" and droppin' a conscious rhyme on Yolanda Adams' uptempo danceable gospel track "Gotta Have Love" (which K.O., Peche and Buddah J Prod. received a grammy nomination & won a Dove award) one of the first gospel / dance / hip hop collaborations, even before Kirk Franklin's STOMP !!!
From inking a major deal as artists with MADONNA as Da K.O. Boyz (Maverick / Warner Bros) after their demo was played on radio stations in DC, Baltimore and Florida and the request lines blew up -WATCH THE K.O. HISTORY VIDEO ABOVE- to playing the drums for several D.C. area Go Go bands and playing drums and rappin' for the D.C. area top 40 band Stratus (a group that he and longtime partner Brian O. founded with some childhood friends while attending Howard University) to producing theme music for television shows on BET and Paramount and producing and creating treatments for T.V. spots for several local companies including the sports apparel store Sports Zone, K. and K.O. Productionz have been grindin' for a while.
As a matter of fact, K.'s first professional show was at a local D.C. Night Club where his band played for a Kiddie Cabaret at the young age of 13. From that day on, K. knew that music was his destiny. Later, he and childhood friend Slick-C began a rap group. They started their own label and their record, "Chillin' At The Go-Go", was a DC anthem on Cathy's Hughes' first radio station WOL A.M. (the only station with a 5 hour Rap/Go-Go format w/ DJ Konan) The record was a huge hit in the DC area clubs. Much later during the decline of the Stratus band, Brian O., (the O. of K.O.) also the keyboardist for the band, set up a little studio in his basement and he and K. began K.O. Productionz - This is where they recorded songs with Tony Terry, Born Jamericans, Riddick Bowe's group N-Phase, and The City Slickstaz w/ D. Brown: they did remixes for artists from Def Leppard w/ Albie Dee to Rare Essence w/ Charles the Mixologist and Mystro, and songs for EU, Trouble Funk, DC Scorpio and a host of others. They produced several hot remixes and jingles that the radio stations played and became top choices on the request line. This led to production opportunities from Arista, Warner Bros, Verity, Elektra, Rowdy, LaFace, Virgin, and a host of independent labels.
They later moved into a larger facility with 3 studios and offices in a partnership with Ted of Peche Productions. K.O.'s talents were also requested as the in-house production team for Big 3 Records as half of DaRaskulls production team. (RIP) Rome. KO / DaRaskulls have more recently done production for DJ Kool, Lil' Eazy E, Aja, & even produced beats for Macho Man Randy Savage (Yes The Wrestler !!!) They're also currently working with some up and coming new artists.
During a session break at Omega Studios, we asked K. how they survive in such a competitive, producer-driven industry ? "I think what makes us unique is our versatility. We can produce any style of music, we can give you a hot east coast hip hop track, a down south 'banga', a thumpin' west coast track...... but then turn around and give you a straight-up sultry ballad for the ladies. We've done Gospel, Go-Go, Reggae, Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, House and Bass mixes..... Rock mixes.... we can do anything because of our background as musicians, we really understand and have an enormous passion and a great ear for good music man, I come from a drummer's and a DJ's perspective and O. is crazy on the keys with the chords, basslines, strings etc., so when we blend our ideas it's always great chemistry" says K. "but now on a lighter and funnier note, we're producing a hilarious rap / comedy album for John Witherspoon aka 63 Cent aka "POPS" from Friday so that's another genre under the belt. This is a fun project cuz he's hysterical and it looks like it might lead to some movie projects, we're always looking to expand."
