Gabriel Sater
“Paulistano” (i.e. from Sao Paulo) of birth, “Pantaneiro” (i.e. from Pantanal) of heart, Gabriel Sater translates in his compositions and musical arrangements the contemporaneous tendencies of his beautiful and promising music, which enchants for its strength and beauty.
The composer and player brings in his recent and amazing CD – launched in May 2006 – an enormous musical quality: the virtuosity on the guitar associated with rich compositions full of innovation and originality. The work involves a variety of rhythms that range from the chamamé to the choro, the tango to the guarânias, the waltz to the Paraguayans polkas, the ballads to modern themes, all with the tunes of Mato Grosso do Sul and the luminosity of Pantanal.
The Brazilian Popular Music, the folklore and the erudite also merge in this cauldron of unusual sounds. The result is an extremely pleasant and remarkable art. Youthfulness and an enriching learning compose his recent and already admired musical career. Gabriel Sater is proud of the friends and masters responsible for initiating him in the paths of music. The family heritage is evident: Almir, Rodrigo, Gisele. Equally undeniable is the valuable influence of Cristiano Kotlinski, notable player whose musicality and versatility inspire him in the discovery of a new musical universe.
He has performed together with big names from the music scene of south of Mato Grosso, such as Almir, Rodrigo and Gisele Sater, Espíndola Family, Paulo Simões, Guilherme Rondon, João Figar, Amambay & Amambaí, Jairo Lara, Lígia Mourão, Marcio DeCamillo, Marcelo Loureiro and Jucy Ibanez. Other names are the southerner Cristiano Kotlinski, Negão dos Santos and Renata Marques (Paranga), the north easterner Xangai, Ney Matogrosso, Paulinho Moska, Renato and Chico Teixeira and Pena Branca.
Recognitions and awards are already part of his success. In 1998, he conquered the 3rd place in the X Festival Universitário da Canção (10th Graduate Festival of Songs) with the piece Luz do Querer (The Want Light), by Fernando D’Andrea, and arrangements by Gabriel. In the following year, 4 awards more, including a 1st place with Mantras do Mar/Reflexo das Águas (Sea Mantras/Water Reflections) by Fernando D’Andrea/Gabriel Sater and a 3rd place with Noites Pantaneiras (Pantaneiras Nights) by Gabriel Sater/Fernando D’Andrea. The first place was also awarded the prize of best instrumental music, and the third the prize of best lyrics.
His composition Turuniño was selected for the CD Festa do Chamamé (Party of Chamané), which culminated in a festival that gathered the new tendencies of the genre. In May 2003, he achieved 1st place at the Mostra Paralela do 4º Americanta (Parallel Exhibition of the 4th Americanta), elected by the jury and the public. At this same festival, together with Gílson Espíndola and Jairo Lara, he conquered the 1st general place of the event.
In 2005 he was selected to represent his state at the well-recognized Festival da América do Sul (South America Festival), and in the following year was invited to perform at the launching of the same festival in Brasilia, FD.
To believe and invest in culture and mainly in the talent that is seen in a solid work is a demonstration of intelligence and faith in the true art, in the culture that promotes change that will, in the coming future, lead the path of new composers.
