Several people have asked where I got the throat singing music in the Ay Kherel remix. The band are called Ay Kherel and the CD is called simply the Music of Tuva. It's available from www.arcmusic.co.uk

So why set up a separate page from our main Jelly Jazz myspace page? (find under 'www.myspace.com/jellyjazzdjs) It seemed to make sense as Jelly Jazz is associated strongly with funk, latin and soul breaks and increasingly I'm making music that falls outside that arena. So I thought I'd open up a little lean-to / shed / attached garage to present some of the more off the wall stuff that I've been playing with.
I'm keeping myself busy DJing with Jelly Jazz, (clubs and radio) helping to promote live music, producing music and writing about it.
More recently I have started to use computers for music creation. For the most part my natural tendency is genre mashing. I'm experimenting with the world music that I love and working out how I can tweak it to make it work better in our club nights. I'm also on a mission to covertly sneak five string banjo into as many different genres as possible. I'm just hoping that one fine day it'll be possible to play a banjo without someone in the room yelling 'Yeeeeha' or mentioning George Formby. (Look for the last time...he played the banjolele...it's different alright!)
For now I'm happy to work with other people's material. I suppose part of the DJing mentality is to become a champion or advocate of a new record, band or artist that you don't think gets enough attention, and promote the hell out of them. Remixing great but obscure music with the dancefloor in mind is a natural extension of that mentality.
In future I'd like to move beyond remixing and build tracks from the ground up...or 'proper' producing as it's known. With that in mind I also hope to gain more experience with recording musicians in a studio setting although these days you can do wonders with a laptop and a cluttered kitchen. (The cowbell-ish thing that comes in halfway through the Dieneba Seck remix is a wooden spoon on a pint glass! Anything goes if it sounds right.)
