I will never forget his last unforeseen, unprepared for moments. Who could have anticipated this gentle sweet humorous creature would not have lived forever. Who could have thought it was today. Today while he surprised us all in the emergency room, twitching his nose and blinking his eyes, gaining strength underneath the tiny oxygen mask made for small animals. He struggled to stand on his front paws, prevented by the IV still attached to his right arm, waiting for tomorrow when he would come in at 11am for his follow up visit. Here he was, a surprise guest at 11pm the previous night instead, rushing in abruptly to the closest emergency room open. Upon CC's examination, I was greeted with the unimaginable, "He must be euthenized. He is dying." Only moments left I said to Carrot Cake, "Mommy's so sorry. Whatever I did, I am sorry." While I pet his sweet little head, the tech assured me Carrot was unconscious and no longer felt pain. He had stopped breathing and there were no more convulsions. The Dr. checked several times to see if his heart had stopped beating yet. I did not have to make the decision to put him down, he died on his own. I carried him out that night in a box they had rushed to find for him- for me, and buried him with love in mom's garden underneath the beautiful zenias.
