I have a nasty habit of saying things most people try and avoid talking about at all costs.

.. width="425" height="350" ....Any body who can help me make porn with this...
I love Game Boys, I do, the sounds they make are amazing, recently I have undertaken a massive project the production of a Game Boy cartridge and program from scratch, I have had to learn C from a book written in 1978, I have had to learn how different chips work and how to make circuit boards, this was no longer just tinkering or circuit bending it was electrical engineering. I knew what I wanted to make a keyboard in a gameboy, that was my aim.
Step 1) Know Your Stuff
I had to learn the ins and outs of the sound registers, I particularily like the gameboy for this, because the Game Boy calls them NR's (noise registers). The game boy has 4 channels, 3 wave and one white noise. I was primarily concerned with channel one, I love square waves, I do I really do. Channel 1 is broken down into 5 parts NR_10 to NR_14, each noise register controls a certain aspect of the sound.
Have I lost you yet?
NR_10 controls the pitch sweep (up, down or not, how fast and how many steps)
NR_11 controls the wave duty & length (12.5%,25%,50% or 75%) 50% being the norm
NR_12 controls the volume envelope (intial volume, up, down, and how many steps)
NR_13 controls the Pitch
NR_14 controls the Pitch & Trigger
Sounds really simply when you put it like this but it's not the Z80 processor only understands binary 0's and 1's so if i wanted it to play a C note at octave 3 I would tell the gameboy
In binary 00101100 11000000
Or in C (programming language) NR_13 0x2CU; NR_14 0xc0U;
Which again is fine the NR_13 holds most of the info on the pitch and the NR_14 hold the higher 3 bits of the 11 bits of pitch information as well as to tell the note to be triggered and to check NR_11 to see how long the note should be played for. Ok so just to clarify each note played requires 40 bits of info to be configured. Again simply once you have learned to configured each and every possible outcome :) and made them all into subroutines of a program.
For Example to make the note pitch sweep up in pitch seven steps with 39.1ms between each step it would be 0101 0111 or in C NR_10 0x57U; to control the sweep.
2) Step 2 C Programming
Ok, I have done Basic and a few other programming languages in the past, so I was quite aware of how computer programs are pieced together, however I was unaware of how alien the syntax would be this wasn't C+ or C++ or C# it was C from the late 70's, so I had had to borrow a book on the subject (just in case you can't remember what they are there is a link to a webpage that describes them).
It took a while to learn about a month, the program for the most part was written in windows notepad and compiled with GBDK and GBDEV and was tested on No$GMB as well as a few other emulators such as SMYGB. The main difficulty was learning to combine elements of C with Game Boy specific operational codes. Learning how to do graphics was another major battle but I wont go into that.
In the research I had learnt that cartridges can be quite big but a 32K one was easiet to make so the software had to be less than that luckily it was easily under that.
3) The cartridge the 27c256 EPROM
As I just mentioned cartidges can be quite big but ones larger that 32K require a MBC a (memory bank controller) which are made by nintendo :( so the program had to be less than that fair enough. Time to learn what a cartridge is/does. Basically the 27c256 chip stores information and the game boy understands where and what, these chips appear in all kinds of things like Atari 2600 cartridges and Commodore 64 cartridges as well as some military applications
It was quite straightforward as there were several diagrams on the net already bassically each pin connects to a specific pin on the 27c256 chip to access different bits of information, to design this and to designed the PCB printed circuitboard I used an amazing program called Eagle, which helped me produce this.
Ok wonderful I have the software and the hardware now how do I put the program onto the chip?
to be concluded...........If you enjoyed this add!!!Pixelh8
