Ready to take on the most treacherous courses, Speedfaces the most ruthless villains as he competes in racesaround the world in such real-life destinations asJapan, Egypt, and Mount Rushmore, and other worldlyplaces like Sandoland, Abalonia, and Flathill. Speedraces blind or without brakes, he sets a new land speedrecord and races the car no one could drive.
Although important, winning races isn’t Speed's primarygoal. Sometimes, he will intentionally lose a race toaid a total stranger, but more often, he will win a racewhile aiding the likes of Inspector Detector in whatevermysterious situation he encounters.Other regular characters included Sparky, the company mechanic; Speed's father, Pops, a former wrestler-turned race car owner and builder; and his mother, and also Speed's chaste girlfriend Trixie. She flies around in a helicopter during each race and advises Speed Racer via a radio link to the Mach Five.
A frequent recurring character, driving car number nine, is the enigmatic Racer X
Masked) Racer), a mysterious soldier of fortune whose secret identity is that of Rex Racer , Speed's older brother, who years earlier had a falling out with the family and exiled himself. Rex left home estranged from his family and assumed the Racer X identity to pursue his racing career after arguing with Pops about it. He stayed in the background looking out for Speed Racer, often rescuing or assisting him. Racer X always left the scene unnoticed, receding into his secret life.In 1999, a real life fullscale replica of the Mach 5 was built for the Child Safety Network at a cost of more than $650,000. Afterwards it was used in a national automotive safety tour, and then sold for $180,000.
One hundred Signature Series cars will be built, each signed by actor Peter Fernandez, the original voice of Speed Racer, who also wrote and directed all 52 episodes, named all the characters and wrote the theme song, "Go Speed Racer Go."
