From the municipality of Spanish Town, St. Catherine Jamaica, hails the talented Alecia Shaw (a/k/a “A’Lisaâ€). Born second of seven children, and like all great singers, A’Lisa started singing in the church, at around age twelve. Her passion for music grew strong and in 1998 she joined the gospel ensemble "Flames of Glory,†an all-girl quintet with musicians, directed by one of jamaica's greatest musical director/musician(MR Owen Dalhouse). This experience gave her exposure to the world of gospel music. The group traveled the length and breadth of Jamaica, opening for local and international acts such as Chevelle Franklin, Grace Thrillers, Papa San and the Grammy award-winning group “Mary Mary.†Despite all that experience, A’Lisa felt she had to grow as a solo performer and in 2003 she embarked on a solo career. Her first stint was with the Reconnection Band at the Versailles Hotel in May Pen, Clarendon. Later that year, she moved to the North Coast and started to perform with the Legal Vibration Band at the Starfish Resort Trelawny. There she was able to hone her skills as a consummate entertainer. A’Lisa has a remarkable vocal instrument. She is capable of using the tone and range of her voice in a unique and distinctive way that is all her own. The year 2005 was a good year for A’Lisa. She championed the North Coast cabaret circuit and was privileged to perform twice at “Jazz in the Gardens†at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. One of the greater highlights of A’Lisa’s career has been her performance at the “Air Jamaica Jazz ‘N’ Blues Festival†in Montego Bay, opening for the likes of John Legend, Shaggy, Lyfe Jennings and Morgan Heritage. With much determination, A’Lisa is now poised to follow in the path of her favorite singers who she lists as Ellen Baylor, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Marcia Griffiths. She is currently working on releasing two singles and has her mind set on recording her first album, which she is now composing. A diva is definitely in the making.
