About Me

* UGSMag Interview
...up now!
Mister Rajbot from UGSMag hooked me up with this ace interview not long ago, and you can read the whole thing HERE ... Rajbot is dope. Thanks! Check it...
* 'WOLF DIESEL MOUNTAIN'
...available NOW on 2600 RECORDINGS !
Here are some words from 2600! This says it all in a way I couldn't...
"...Buddy Peace has been championing a slow-burning revolution in mixtapes for over five years now. His pedigree is unchallenged - 'A Friendly Game Of Chess' (with fellow 2600 accomplice ZILLA ), 'Watch And Repeat Play' for the Warp Vision DVD and last years' 'Commonwealth Kids' mix with Bully Records' Carlo - pushing the boundaries and expectations of what a mix could be.
'Wolf Diesel Mountain' is a monster fed on the bones of all that have gone before it. This is a mix that is complex and diverse - slices and selections of nearly 100 tracks in under an hour. Samples are chopped, beats are re-programmed and tracks are fully remixed - without ever falling into the common trap of mixes that veer off on tangents to show off the DJ's record collection.
Not that Buddy hasn't got a collection worth losing limbs for - but the genius here lies in the construction. This is a mix of broken hearts and block parties, unfaithful guitars and dusty drums. There is a journey here, a narrative of disparate elements combined, like the best indie film you never saw. But like every good mix it still bumps, leaving your spine aching and your head bristling with hopes of redemption.
In short, this is how mixes should be: inventive, heavy, restrained and beautiful...
"
...and here are some kind words from some undisputed champs!
"Wolf Diesel Mountain is simply a masterpiece of eclecticism, sewn together by dead man's drums. It stomps across genres picking out all the best music you were too stupid to buy, gives you a little taste and, before you know what's happened, it barrels off in a different direction. A triumph, and a lesson in how life affirming mixtapes can be - all hail Buddy Peace!"
- Bracken (Anticon)
"Buddy Peace is no slacker. His mixes are full of edits, attention to detail, and a lifetime's worth of entertaining dialogue snippets. He's got a real talent in creating new moods and isn't afraid to let tracks breathe and develop. Wolf Diesel Mountain plays like a documentary with no picture. Put your headphones on and listen as Buddy's cast of heroes, villains, and weirdoes take you on an entertaining journey"
- Controller 7 (Bully Records)
"All the songs are totally reworked with said indy/post/etc. rock elements... not just guitar samples, not just drums, but all elements of the song are interpolated... everything is seamlessly blended. Buddy also switches up the sample rates up especially on a couple of the breaks which I like. No scratch solos or beat juggling. Not random or quirky for the sake of horned rimmed glasses and stupid kissing circles. Thematically there's more to it which I haven't quite grasped, yet. The Liars (Grown Men Don't Fall Into the River... one of my favorite Liars songs)/Edan combo was definitely one of my favorite parts, and on a lot of the tracks, it sounds like Buddy gives equal share of the spotlight on the rock band vs. the MC so you appreciate the dynamics of the song structures more than say a Grey Album type mix only with the source material chopped to hell then suffocated to death under the weight of the accapella. Almost no filler, I will be listening to this again at work, several times in succession. It's mastered well and released on an actual CD (not CD-R) with cool simple packaging."

* Here's a dope feature from Mark of the ace Needsnowater Records, on the 3 Bar Fire site :
...link here
Thank you Mark!
I hooked it all together with turntables and the MPC in one way or another (with a lot of other tools and bits & pieces), and it took a pretty long time. This was mostly due to various moves here and there and a lot going on! I hope you enjoy it if you get round to checking it and definitely give me a shout if you want to! There's a minimix on my profile (which you're probably hearing now) which is the whole thing in a whirlwind edit (with unheard pieces from along the way), so have listen first if you like.

podcast feature...
The ultrafriendly folks at 3 BAR FIRE have hosted a podcast I made for the mix, which has most of the original tracks I used for it in their original form. Well, sort of original - I've edited them pretty severely and chopped them up a bit but just for fluidity and to shorten them a touch! There's no tracklist really but if you don't know the tracks and you want to know more then just gimme a holler and I'll help you out. Hope you like it.'WOLF DIESEL MOUNTAIN : Deer Blood Falls' podcast
* MYUZYK Netlabel : 'Inspired By Boards Of Canada' Compilation
AVAILABLE NOW!
Download for free

The Myuzyk label have released their download only compilation of music inspired by Boards Of Canada. I was invited to submit some goods for it and I ended up making a two parter, which is called 'Collapse Suite, Autumn 1974'. I took some of the more hip hop elements of their music with some 70's dialogue and tones - it was a lovely project to be involved in, and a pleasure to make music that is directly inspired and paying respect to a group I've been into for years... I've heard most of the others now too and they're amazing! Stay alert y'all - make sure you peep this when it arrives, it won't be long.

* BUCK 65 : 'Situation' Megamix
...by BUDDY PEACE
...on the STRANGE FAMOUS RECORDS website
Dang! Here it is y'all. If you managed to keep up with big Buck's movements in 2007 then you'll hopefully be aware of his stunning album, released October 30th '07, entitled 'Situation' ( Strange Famous Records ), with the year of 1957 featuring strongly in the album's narrative. With Skratch Bastid at the helm on the production (with a little help from DJ Signify), it's a stunning set with perhaps more of a straight up hip hop sound this time around. The beats and rhymes are just insane, seriously if you enjoy Buck 65 then you'll fall for this without a shadow of a doubt.
I completed this megamix around the start of October for the release of the album, at the invitation of the homie Tom Inhaler, all round instrument sicko and overseer of the Strange Famous forum. Being something of a Buck librarian since the early days, must have been the first release of Vertex or thereabouts, I've got a fair bit of Buck in my collection so I've always had some ideas about what I might do if I was ever approached with this kind of assignment! So it was such a pleasure to be approached to complete this in an official capacity. I used parts from the 'Situation' as well as bits and pieces from the Buck back catalogue with some rarities and goodies, as well as the odd original sample here and there too. Here's the tracklist :
Le 65isme / 15 Minutes To Live / Out Of Focus / Pope / Wicked And Weird / Killed By A Horse / TACHICHI & DJ MOVES : 'Head Up' (featuring Buck 65) / Square 4 / Kennedy Killed The Hat / Bandits / Boom Bip : 'The Unthinkable' (featuring Buck 65) / The Centaur / Situation Intro / Weirdo Magnet Track 20 / Riverbed 1 / Out Of Focus / Sounds From The Back Of The Bus / Square 1 / The Rebel [acapella] / Supper At Sundown / Weirdo Magnet Track 1 / Shutterbug / Shutterbug [acapella] / Pants On Fire / Bachelor Of Science / Hot Lunch / Sage Francis : 'Got Up This Morning' [instrumental] / Mr Dibbs : 'Healthy Serving' / Sebutones : 'Tranquilized Tones' / Weirdo Magnet Track 16 / Cop Shades [acapella] / Buck 65 & Kotep Omegatron : 'Fresh Juice' / Sore / Blood Of A Young Wolf / Square 1 / Diesel Treatment / Sebutones : '05 Pros' / Weirdo Magnet Track 9 / You Know The Science / 65 Buick / On All Fours / Drawing Curtains / 463 / Whitebread / Skill Saw / Memories Of The Passed / Way Back When [acapella] / Indestructible Sam / The Rebel / Way Back When / Lipstick [acapella] / Lipstick / The Centaur [source music] / Square 1 / Wicked And Weird / Heatwave / Heatwave [acapella] / Red To Black / The Beatific / 1957 / Cop Shades / Heatwave [source music] / Whitebread [acapella]
I guess I'll just leave it there and just remind y'all to keep checking the Myspaces and websites and whatnot, and do NOT miss 'Situation'. I'm very serious.
I made this mix with an MPC2000XL, turntables and CDJ1000.
Now how about that arm wrestle?
"I can't be held accountable, so instead I pass the blame - besides, I wanna live forever like the cast of 'Fame'..."
* From October 1st 2001 to July 30th 2007 I worked at Banquet Records in Kingston, alongside Jon Tolley (CEO of the whole Gravity DIP label, you might say), big Smiznith aka SeldomSeenSmith (ill DJ/producer and purveyor of the finest quality jacking & discofied-tech house) and the bow-pit orchestrator and Fugazi-extra Dave House (on the solo tip and with band, The Steal). I was there for the transition of the homie ‘ZILLA’ from his place at Banquet (known then as Beggars Banquet – see HERE for more on the exciting history of Banquet Records – there is some of the background story there to explain things in a little more detail!) to the next fork in his career path. There are too many good times, memories and reflections to add here but Banquet continues to rise to such great heights on a daily basis. It has changed me and my life, and it continues to change the way the water flows, so make sure you’re a part of it.
"...we're chained to the world, and we all gotta pull..."
I've been DJing since all the way back in the early 90s - Soundlab turntables (DLP Mk3 I think they were), Kam/MadeIIFade mixers (complete with three second sampler), broken tape decks - the whole nine. You know how it goes. And that tape deck was pretty broken too - a Fisher one I believe, and when it didn't work my tapes would have that gnarled up and unfixable phasing sound. This happened a lot, much to the frustration of me and my brother.
I've been making beats and teaching myself sampler math since sometime in the late 90's, starting with a fun and very lo-fi Yamaha sampler and leading up to various other bits and pieces, mainly the MPC2000, and then the XL, which is my weapon of choice for the most part. It's been an amazing journey so far for real and it continues to be as such. I am mainly associated with the Lex Records label as a DJ, and Warp on occasions too, as well as with my peoples up in Canada at the Bully Records Heat Department. I've done a fair few mixtapes in the past, be they hiss laced and faded old cassettes from high school (of which a few are still circulating I believe - be prepared for over the top scratch solos and hella distortion - and please let me know if you have one! I don't have any record of who got them when I did them, and I did most of them one by one), or shiny CD - including an officially released Warp Records Megamix ('Watch And Repeat Play') alomgside my mellow 'Zilla' - and a gang of solo bits and pieces. Some of these include a Lex Records Megamix and a Beans Megamix which are in the vaults for now but we'll see what happens (they are still available from the archive from listening – holler!), as well a mix for the Bully Records beatmaking genius from San Francisco Controller 7 too), and I've been playing at shows and gigs since the mid 90's-ish, or thereabouts, professionally and when I was starting out on my quest.
A couple of notes from the past…
Some past highlights for me during the course of some of my DJing travels include playing at the unbelievable Sonar festival in Barcelona (sharing stage time with Gang Starr, Roots Manuva – and almost sharing a dressing room with So Solid Crew! Gangsta!), the Dedbeat up in Norf England (with my man ‘Zilla’, playing alongside Atmosphere, Dibbs, Ty, Edan and loads more – that was so, so ill), Copenhagen’s Roskilde Festival with Dangermouse and Prince Po (I was Prince Po's DJ!), as well as Valencia’s ‘Electro2m’ festival in 20005 with Beans and QBert, which were all mentally mad to say the very least, and more than a few London/UK shows in recent times too. I’m not trying to list them all here! I played in Valencia in July 2005 with my Barcelona counterpart 2D2 as well for like 5 hours in an open air amphitheatre which was just absolutely beautiful. Some of the photos make it look like we're DJing in hell itself at some points, really. Crazy. Big 'Zilla' has always been a real inspiration as well and I've been lucky enough to DJ with him on many occasions (Dedbeat was the main one but there have been loads since) - I hope that can continue... He’s on some next level electronic sickness these days which is awesome to behold. There are so many collabos and ideas that are yet to happen, or have been going for a while now – just a matter of time now.
…It's been a lot of fun, and definitely an incredible learning experience all the way. I've been lucky enough to meet some truly beautiful, talented and inspirational people which I am honoured to be associated with and it's something I am ever grateful for. Same with the shop too really - some of the people I have met there are just ace and I have been fortunate to make such acquaintances. It's always an inspirational experience.
For the future my plans involve a full time university course (coming soon yo!), a proper full length reckid (working on that – progress is being made!), more collaborations that I know what to do with (on the really - I wish I could do more about them - things are starting to happen gradually though and there are actions underway) and more live shows. The inclusion of the MPC looks more and more likely too since the live show at the Blank night in Sheffield with Waxfactor which was incredible, and certainly some other additions into the live set… I don't really mention things until they are looking like they will definitely happen, but I will elaborate in full as and when as to the other stuff… There are some fine looking goings on in the horizon…
Holler at me on here or email - that would be mighty decent. I'll always try and reply or whatever. Don't let the beard scare you... I'm a friendly guy...
Peace and much love, as always, and as I’ve said before – thank you so sincerely to Banquet Records and all who work within for nearly 6 years of power moves and positivity. It don’t stop.

My Interests

- from Jimmy Corrigan, The Smartest Kid On Earth
One of the most beautifully crafted graphic novels you could wish for... This one isn't though...

MPCs, shitty second hand keyboards and random noise making electronics, bullhorns and megaphones, the incredible miss Sophie Webb, deer and successfully avoiding running deer (some close calls), late night politicking (if I don't fall asleep first - you'll see), sultanas by the handful, getting my walk on for many hours, gamelan (getting there yo), Barcelona and its residents, America, cranberries, Garrison Keillor, four tracks and tape hiss, second hand records by the crate, super 8 cameras, Zip discs, the Spectrum 128k (if you had one of these, holler at me), the Amiga 500, old photos and slides, recording day to day people drama on minidisc now and again (word to Coma Emilio) – the kebab shop fight was pretty intense, drones, hella coffee (as Dave House will attest to - we drinks hella coffee yo, we connoisseurs n’ shit).

TOM WAITS : 'Dirt In The Ground' (but the whole back catalogue is unf'withable, of course)
DIVINE STYLER : 'Ain't Saying Nothing'

Damn, that was powerful), Eternal Sunshine..., Factotum, Fear Of A Black Hat (better than CB4 but CB4 still deserves props), Fist Of The North Star, Fitzcarraldo, Flaming Lips : 'Fearless Freaks', Friends Forever, Fugazi : 'Instrument', Fantastic Planet, Ghost World, Hedgehog In The Fog, The Hot Rock (the soundtrack is ILL), Howl's Moving Castle, The Kid Stays In The Picture, Lost Book Found, M, Meet John Doe, Metropolis, Minutemen : 'We Jam Econo', My Best Fiend, Night On Earth, basically anything by Yuri Norstein, Old Boy, Orphanage, Pans Labyrinth, Paradise Lost, Princess Mononoke, Public Domain, Punishment Park, Return Of The Living Dead/Day Of The Dead/Evil Dead 2 (back in the day classics - George Romero science), Rollercoaster, Rushmore, Sage Francis : 'Life Is Easy', Search For Animal Chin, Shogun Assassin, Short Cuts, Silent Running, Some Kind Of Monster, Space Is The Place, Spellbound, Spinal Tap, Spirited Away, The Straight Story, Stripes, Taking Of The Pelham 123, Tale Of Tales (an unbelievable 30 minute Russian animation), They Live, TV Junkie, Warriors, Wheels Of Fire

But don't get me started on top 100 list shows. Please. I don't watch a whole gang of television to be honest but it's okay now and again.

Books:

The Jimmy Corrigan book by Chris Ware is just incredible. It's a graphic novel but the attention to detail, emotion and overall style is beautiful. You need to peep it if you get a chance.
Other than that though, The Monkeywrench Gang, Perfume, Being Dead, Northern Lights, Innocent When You Dream (Tom Waits interviews), A Confederacy Of Dunces, Lake Wobegone Days and all Garrison Keillor, We Need To Talk About Kevin (I finished it Soph!), Carter Beats The Devil, Flatland, Vernon (God) Little, Americana, The Human Stain, The White City, The Periodic Table and hecka Bill Bryson - Bill's the homie. I have a lot of time for Bill Bryson. John Updike is also running things.

Heroes:

Bonnie Prince Billy. Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips. And my pops too.
