PREVIEW OF THE INTERVIEW WITH DISASHI OF GYM CLASS HEROES AND THE MIDNIGHT SOCIETY FAME.Shamrock: What is your name and what is your role in the band?
Disashi: In Gym Class Heroes I play guitar, write songs, and do some singing. In The Midnight Society I play the guitar, bass, sing, write the songs, and do the programming, which includes the drums. There are no other band members for that project yet currently. Although my friend Dan Collins is gonna shred the drums once I get things put together.
Shamrock: The Midnight Society started in 2001. What exactly is The Midnight Society?
Disashi:Well, it started out as just an acoustic project I was working on for fun. I recorded the song "December" on my brother's old iMac by recording vocals into the computer mic, and guitars direct into the computer. ha! Eventually I found software, Reason, that would allow me to program drums as well as other sounds. I purchased ProTools and I figured, why not write some rock songs? So that's what I did. In 2004 I completed my first EP, "9 Years Later...", but was asked to join Gym Class Heroes at the same time. Before I got a chance to send out any demos I decided that GCH was a great opportunity and that I would be working with some amazing musicians and song-writers. So I put Midnight on a semi-hold. I kept selling records but I obviously would not be able to tour on it while GCH was on a hectic schedule.
Shamrock: How is life different for you being part of one of the biggest bands at the moment?
Disashi: I would say life is and isn't very different. I'd say that the biggest difference is that on any given day, I now know for a fact that if I'm hungry I will eat at some point that day. There were so many instances during the first 3 years of touring when I remember thinking, "ok, I'm really, really sick. Do I want some NyQuil today or some Taco Bell." And it's definitely gonna be one or the other. But the van days help you to appreciate things much more when they get to this level. Plus being in a van gives you some amazing moments that you'll never get back. As far as things being different now, I'd say that we still tour all the time, and play shows everyday... so we still don't hang out with our family, friends, and loved ones that much. We still get to play music everyday, which is amazing.
Shamrock: If you could work with any artist/band past/present, who would it be? Why?
Diashi: I wouldn't necessarily need to work with this artist, but I'd love to watch Jimi Hendrix live. Hands down one of my biggest influences as a guitarist because I was able to feel what he felt simply from the way he played. Currently I'd love to work with Muse or Bloc Party.
Shamrock: Who has been your favorite band to work with so far?
Disashi: We went on a tour back in the day with a reggae band called John Brown's Body . Their live shows, fan support, musicianship and song-writing definitely blew me away. Plus their fans came to the event ready to dance damn it. No warm up... no no no. They were ready. I'd love to experience that again some time.
