I'd like to meet:
in general (and most of all): Funny people, people who want to make stuff, People with interesting ideas, People who know about stuff. Most of all, people who have integrity and intelligence and honesty. I don't care if we like the same records, if you're a boring jerk, your a boring jerk.
Fantasy people
Alive: Katherine McCoy, Samantha Powers, Pierre Bernard, Takeshi Kitano, Werner Herzog, Julia Kristeva
Dead: Edward Said, Oscar Wilde (of course), Susan Sontag, Joan of Arc, Fassbinder, Groucho Marx, why not- let's say Siddhartha Gautama
People I avoid
the uncurious, people who think that irony is a hedge for self conscious conservative nostalgia or questionable taste. (Just admit it, you like Hall and Oates. its fine, I do too. I'm not secretly laughing at you. and that's not what irony is. Gift of the Magi people!) People who lack empathy.
Music:
Sebastian Tellier, Harry Nilsson, Todd Rundgren, Robert Wyatt, Prince, Scott Walker, Roxy Music, Chic, Judas Priest, Art Bears, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Lotte Lenya, Hoagy Carmichael, Lila SW and Scott B. Kevin Rowland and company. lots and lots of stuff that isn't as nerdy as all that.
Favorite Record of all time: What's Goin On.
Favorite Song - Love is the Drug
Desert Island Picks: The Cure-Happily Ever after, The Clash - London Calling, Roxy Music, Prince - 1999, The Band,
"humorless sensitive dudes" ugh. DMB, Phish, John Mayer, bad brooklyn noise bands,
Movies:
Aguirre, the Wrath of God, the Up series, Happy Together, Veronika Voss, Hearts and Minds, the Antoine Doinel movies, Seven Samurai, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Wizard People Dear Reader, Super Troopers, Everything Lukas Moodyson, Fanny and Alexander, Top Hat, Harlan County The Marx Brothers, Dune, Return to Oz, Time of the Wolf, Head On, Reflections in a Golden Eye,
Xiu Xiu the sent down girl, Eyes Wide Shut, Daredevil, A Time to Kill, Any movie that requires a bad rape scene to inject some drama into it. Also (and to a lesser degree) anything that takes a crass commercial crap on my childhood.
Television:
Darkplace = best tv show ever. EVER!
Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, The Office (BBC), Rome, The usual geek fare. Also, remember sifl and olly? that was great. Thundar the Barbarian, I LOVE tv but the way I like to watch it is sort of all at once, as in, if I can't watch a whole season in one shot I don't like it as much. The thing I LIKE about tv is that it can be so epic. I want to make a tv show. some day...some day.
Friends. I have only maybe seen one episode. I don't get it. Also Thundercats. I could never get into that.
Books:
Sea of Fertility, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Brideshead Revisited, In Cold Blood, History of Sexuality, Course in General Linguistics, Culture and Imperialism, Wretched of the Earth, The Problem from Hell, Mythologies (RB), everything Tufte,
narcisistic contemporary novelists who's smug self satisfaction with their own precious cleverness is more evident than any richness of text or lasting substance or even a serious and unironic love of language. I would just yawn, but if I open my mouth I might barf.
Heroes:
Role Models - Gore Vidal, Oscar Wilde, Truman Capote, Charles Nelson Reilly, Prince.
Actual Heroes: Michel Foucault, Gerard Paris-Clavel, Raphael Lemkin, Franz Fanon, Hugo Chavez, Romeo Dallaire Prince.
VILLAINS: RuDoch (aka, rupert m.), Curt Lemay, Jerry Bruckheimer.
