Some Breast Cancer Facts:
* One in eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.
* Mammograms can detect cancer up to two years before a lump can be felt.
* Eighty percent of women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease.
* In Arizona, breast cancer is the leading form of cancer among women. An estimated 2,800 women will be diagnosed, and 600 women will die of breast cancer in Arizona this year.
* An estimated 182,800 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, making it the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women.
* Breast cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer death in women
* More than 97 percent of women whose breast cancer is found and treated early with no spreading beyond the breast, will survive.

A Woman’s Chances of Breast Cancer Increases With Age
By age 30, 1 out of 2,212 women will be affected.
By age 40, 1 out of 235 women will be affected.
By age 50, 1 out of 54 women will be affected.
By age 60, 1 out of 23 women will be affected.
By age 70, 1 out of 14 women will be affected.
By age 80, 1 out of 10 women will be affected.
Ever, 1 out of 8 will be affected. Early Detection is the Key! Five Year Survival Rate By Age
Younger than 45- There is an 81%- chance of survival.
Ages 45-64- There is an 85% chance of survival.
Ages 65 and older- There is an 86% of survival. Guidelines Women Should Follow for Early Detection of Breast Cancer
-Early detection of breast cancer can lead to greater likelihood of cure.
-Women 20 years of age and older should women should be told about the benefits and limitations of breast self-exams . Women should be aware of how their breasts normally feel and report any new breast change to a health professional as soon as they are found.
-Women 20-39 should have a physical examination of the breast at least every three years, performed by health care professional such as a physician, physician assistant, nurse or nurse practitioner.
-Women 40 and older should have a physical examination of the breast every year, performed by a health care professional, such as a physician, physician assistant, nurse or nurse practitioner.
-Women 40 years of age should receive a screening mammogram every year. The National Cancer Institute recommends mammography every one to two years for women between 40-50 years of age.
-Beginning at age 50, screening mammography should be performed every year.

Incidence of Breast Cancer By Ethnic Group:
- All women are at risk for developing breast cancer.
-The older a woman is, the greater her chances of developing breast cancer.
-Approximately 77% of breast cancer cases occur in women over 50 years of age.
According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute:
-White, Hawaiian, and African-American women have the highest incidence of invasive breast cancer in the United States.
-Korean, American Indian, and Vietnamese women have the lowest incidence of invasive breast cancer in the United States.
-African-American have the highest death rate from breast cancer and are more likely to be diagnosed with a later stage of breast cancer than White women.
-In the age groups, 30-54 and 55-69 years, African-American women have the highest death rate from breast cancer, followed by Hawaiian women, and white non-Hispanic women.
-In the 70 year old age group, the death rate from breast cancer for white women is higher than for African –American.
