Harvie S
Harvie S, composer, arranger, basssist, educator and producer is continually challenging himself and his peers, expanding the borders of musical direction.
As a bassist he has performed and recorded with the greats in music including Ray Barretto, Paul Bley, Michael Brecker, Paquito D'Rivera, Gil Evans, Art Farmer, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Jim Hall, Billy Hart, Lee Konitz,Yusef Lateef, Dave Leibman, Joe Lovano,Pat Metheny, Paul Motion(Motian), Arturo O'Farrill, Danilo Perez, Maria Schneider, Toots Thielmans, Ray Vega, Sadao Watanabe, James Williams, Steve Wilson and countless others.
He can be heard on several hundred CDs as a sideman, ten as a leader and another twenty as a co-leader. These recordings include his work with a panoply of artistic voices such as James Brown, Chick Corea, Sheila Jordan, Steve Kuhn, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, Tom Harrell, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, Kenny Barron, Ingrid Jensen, Pat Martino, Dr. Billy Taylor, Grover Washington Jr., David Mathews,Virginia Mayhew and Tony Bennett.
The next CD for Harvie S will be coming out on High Note Records in duo with Jazz legend Kenny Barron.
Harvie also just recorded a quintet Cd in Austria while on tour with his regular trio of Daniel Kelly and William Beaver" Bausch" with trumpeter Franz Hackl and saxophonist Thomas Kugi.
His previous 2 Cds were released on the Zoho Label and received rave reviews and were nominated for the Latin jazz Grammys.
The Harvie S band will be returning to Europe in may 2008 for a tour. After That
Harvie will tour with the Harvie S Mimmo Caifiero Open Band in italy.
Harvie is a receipiant of major grants from the Fund for U.S. Artists, National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, ASCAP, CAPS and Meet the Composer. In the fall of 2003 Harvie S toured Southeast Asia for 6 weeks as a Jazz Ambassador. This was a very successful tour that garnered rave reviews and spread goodwill abroad. In 2004 Harvie S was a chosen to give lectures on Latin Jazz at The International Society of Bassists and the International Association of Jazz Educators. Harvie's composition "S" was a winner in International Song Writing competition (Jazz catagory) in 2006.He has been a guest on NPRs "All Things Considered" and "Fresh Air." His career is documented in Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz, the Grove Dictionary of Jazz and the All Music Guide.
Harvie S has written the themes for the documentaries The Trumpet Kings, The Piano Legends and John Coltrane and can been seen and heard on the music videos of Toots Thielemans, Pat Martino, Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Jane Ira Bloom and others.The 14 year duo project of Sheila Jordan and Harvie S set the timeless standard in bass and voice performance.Harvie has had featured articles in Downbeat, Jazziz,Cadence ,Coda(Canada), Jazztimes, Swing Journal(Japan),Jazz Life, Jazz Forum(Poland), Jazz Hot (France), Hot House, the Music Paper, the New York Times, the New York Post, the Los Angeles Times, Jazz Podium, and Jazz-it (Italy).
The Harvie S Band has performed at The Blue Note, The Iridium, Sweet Rhythm, the Philadelphia Museum After Five Series, the JVC Jazz Festival, Manhattan School of Music Jazz Festival, the Iona College Art at Noon Series, Jazz Forum Arts, The Rochester Jazz Festival, The Lake George Jazz Festival, The Flushing Town Hall Jazz Series, Cape Cod Jazz Festival, Tblissi Jazz Festival, the WBGO Summer Jazz Festival, the Tarrytown Library Concert Series, the New Rochelle Library Series, the Middleton County Artists in Residence Series, the 55 Bar, the Kitano, the Zinc Bar, and the Patterson School District Arts in Education Program. They have released four CD's, the most recent Funky Cha (ZOHO 2006) has received rave revies for it unique combustion of modern jazz improvization and Afro-Cuban rhythms and styles.In addition to his performance career, Harvie is an active educator. He has held the jazz bass instructor position at The Manhattan School of Music for both undergraduate and graduate divisions since 1984. Harvie S has presented workshops, lecture demonstrations and presentations throughout the world on The Art of Listening, Elements of Jazz Harmony, Rhythm Workshops, The History of Jazz and the Blues, Jazz: Then and Now, Afro-Cuban Music- It's Origins and Relationship to Jazz, and the History of Jazz Bass.
