MettaMetta literally means friendliness in Pali, the ancient Indian language in which the Theravada Buddhist scriptures were written. It is a broad concept, encompassing loving kindness, love, friendliness, and universal compassion. In true Buddhist spirit, it signifies love without a desire to possess but with a desire to help, to sacrifice self-interest for the welfare and well-being of humanity. Thus, it is a feeling of boundless love towards all living creatures and the desire to make others happy without discrimination. Metta reflects not only an emotion, but also entails doing charitable deeds.
