VERMONT
Four Long Years
Today, March 19 2008 marks the forth anniversary of Brianna Maitland’s disappearance. Unlike past years there will be no marches to the lonely spot where her car and broken necklace were found. No balloons, no candlelit vigil.
But that does not mean she has been forgotten. In homes across Vermont she will be remembered. Remembered in small intensely private ways, a single candle lit here, a prayer said there.
In many homes someone will take a faded, wrinkled, picture out of a childhood scrape book and once again ask the question; “whatever happened to the beautiful girl with the radiant smile?â€
In hundreds of homes across America and Canada, even a few in Europe, Brianna will be remembered by people who have never met her but learned about her story at Bringbrihome. org/ .
There Bri’s Aunt Tammy will do what she has been doing every day for four long years, she will check the tip line hoping against hope to find that one clue that will lead to a answer. When asked the question if after all this time she still checks, she replied; “I still check the website, hourly . . . hoping . . . waiting. . .
March 19 2008 will dawn in Montgomery, Vermont much as it did four years ago. More snow this year, but otherwise the same. But for hundreds it will never be the same. They subconsciously use that day as a demarcation point, life before Brianna vanished, and life after. Like Bill Murray’s character in the movie “Groundhogs day†for a few, it is always March 19 2004.
On Oct. 8 2004 Brianna turned 18. At the time everyone still hoped that she would someday return. Her parents Bruce and Kellie gathered with her family and friends. As a beautiful fall day in Vermont unfolded they talked and joked about the missing quest of honor. Last fall Brianna turned 21. Most of her friends have come to realize that there is only a very slim chance that she will ever come home. Regardless they made a birthday cake for her.
Three simple words made out of candy stars said everything that needed to be said, “We Love Youâ€
Brianna’s 18th and 21st Birthday cakes
Many things of course have changed. Brianna’s high school friends are no longer teens. They have grown into young adults. Some have gone to college. Some have gotten jobs in other parts of Vermont, one even worked in Canada for a long time. Several of Bri’s closest friends have become mothers, and now have young children of their own.
Brianna’s older brother Waylon got married last year. But Bruce and Kellie found it to painful to remain in Vermont and now live on a farm in upstate New York. Their Shar-pei Lao, still loves to be held and petted, Bri’s cat Muffin still loves to curl up and bake in the morning sun.
Brianna’s friends describe her as very pretty, independent, outgoing and highly intelligent.. Someone who wanted to see the world beyond the hills of rural Vermont.
Collectively they ask themselves the haunting question, “ Sometimes I wonder who you'd be todayâ€
There have been many theories as to what may have happened to Brianna. That she fell in with a couple of evil people who dealt drugs and they murdered her. That she may have been abducted by interstate sex traffickers. That she was kidnapped and murdered by a serial killer. That she may have fallen victim to teen rivalry. Many theories, but no answers.
Much has changed in the last four years, but one important thing has not, Brianna is still missing.
Brianna is missing, but she will never be forgotten.
