About Me
Blast furnaces working by some unseen, nefarious design. Machines at their breaking point, faltering and sputtering in their last. Shimmering squiggles and doodles throb at the edges, albeit briefly. Neurotransmission pulses, ones and zeros deciphered as a syncopated beat. Alternating currents caught under surveillance, this is the sound of Star of Kaos . . .
Star of Kaos is an experimental electronic outfit hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana. Formed in 2004 by local writer and artist M. Bevis, Star of Kaos is the continuation of a career in sound experimentation. Primarily consisting of three core members, Star of Kaos utilizes a diverse array of guest performers to better achieve the intended effect of a composition.
Star of Kaos is sifted from the ashes of New Orleans, Louisiana's first "industrial" band, GIMP--existing from 1991 until the untimely, painful passage of founding member R. McColley in 2003. After a year of deep introspection and mourning, M. Bevis decided it was time to get back to work; to continue the experiments in sound and collage. Choosing to delve ever deeper into the ways and means conditioned by the original sound terrorists that inspired M. Bevis to journey into the field of sonic discord, Star of Kaos is an testing of the limits of what is accepted as music and the continuation of a tradition of experiments in sound. An avid researcher of belief systems and ritual practices, he dubbed this new project, Star of Kaos, referring to the Discordian edict, “One must have Kaos within, to give birth to a shining star!â€
Styles clash, as random found-sounds and snippets waft through landscapes of either blasting sheets of noise, or ethereal synthetic drones. Temple bells chime, as intonations flow, wrapped snug inside swaths of digital effects. Guitar deconstruction, jagged and raw, gives way to throbbing notes of humble bliss. A devil, in thesecond- line funeral of fortified wine and Quaaludes, stumbled amid towering rays of droning KAOS.
Intended to be far more eclectic and adventurous than GIMP, Star of Kaos is wildly experimental, fusing myriad influences and styles, yet remaining wholly original and fresh. Star of Kaos started out small, with minimal equipment and a desktop computer, creating reinterpretations of earlier unfinished GIMP material. In 2005, Star of Kaos released the “Amnesia Pharmaceutica†e.p. on the cd-r label, “Kaostarâ€, with the talents of previous members of GIMP, and current lineup member K. Demolay.
Local underground zine PARANOIZE reviewed the six song e.p., and had this to say: “Am I wrong for bashing one “noise†cd a couple of reviews back and then praising this one? I don’t know, but it just sounds like there was more put into this than just a bunch of loud static.â€
Since Hurricane Katrina washed everything down the drain here in NOLA, Star of Kaos has been hard at work creating their anticipated full length album “Making The Robot Scream.†With a generous grant from the Musicares Foundation for lost equipment, and the addition of a third full-time member in longtime collaborator Dawne Fabergé, Star of Kaos is poised to resume the legacy left behind by GIMP-creating an unpretentious, immersing, unpredictable sound experience.
After their inaugural gig at the aptly titled NOIZEFEST in 2007, Local alternative city newspaper Gambit quipped: “Instead of hiding behind their gadgetry, STAR of KAOS featured a confrontational front man, screaming at the audience over industrial beats and sounds – although, in the tradition of this music they also included the right amount of soft, pretty, ambient curveballs.â€
Found sounds, more than enough feedback. Static, throat disabling, guitar stroking into other shapes and forms. A brick load of vibrations humming low, a sickly skiffle beat beaten into something by something all converge in a candy cane of sickly sweetness. Snippets of the Pop Culture afterlife, decaying tape and line interference. Transcendent states of catharsis and landmass, distant drums and dread. Star of Kaos is about the unhindered enjoyment of personal pleasure, and the illuminating light that true purity can present.
STAR of KAOS is available, at select times, for live performances, but adequate notice is required due to planning and preparation. STAR of KAOS creates a seamless, one-of-a-kind set for any live outing, and integrates the venue’s size and capacity into the style and tone for that action. The band is also able to provide their own amplification, for smaller venues and parties. STAR of KAOS comes fully prepared for any sound and/or size limitations, is fully self-contained, and requires minimal space and power outlets to provide a show. For venues with an in-house p.a., we need no more than eight channels on a soundboard, sometimes less.
Star of Kaos is always available for interviews, reviews, or general comments and questions. We welcome any and all correspondence.
