Nounverber is the studio project of
David Scott , a native of New Orleans whose musical background defies any and all efforts to condense it into a simple paragraph. He has written and recorded songs under a slew of aliases, ranging from drunken acoustic ballads, guitar-driven pop songs, insane electronic noise, and symphonic classical music.
His ability to play a multitude of instruments has given him the aptitude to envision an entire song before a single note is written, often writing out, composing, and mixing an entire track in one sitting. His home studio contains a library of hand-written musical ideas, sketched on napkins and small pieces of paper. He writes out these compositions in his own musical shorthand whenever inspiration strikes...while at work, sitting at a red light, or shopping for groceries. To any other musician, his "sheet music" would seem like unintelligible patterns of random dots, slashes, and letters...but to him, they contain the result of years of devotion to his craft.
He entertains his experimental nature by incorporating mathematical theories and philosophy into his music. If a particular passage sounds like it is going off course like a train about to derail, it is simply following a set of pre-determined parameters that can be heard in other elements of the song if the listener is paying close enough attention. Each instrument carries the DNA of the entire song, hidden inside the notes and rhythms and only becoming apparent if the song is studied as a whole. Sometimes this experimentation is in the form of specific intervals in between notes, other times it is reflected in the time signature of the song. Instead of an "inside joke", think of it as an "inside equation". There is always a method to the madness.
His experimental approach to song-writing is what attracted him to the endless possibilities of electronic music in the first place. Music from artists like Richard D. James and Tom Jenkinson made him work harder at creating stranger and more surreal music. His influences are more vast and boundless than they ever were, but it's through the Drum and Bass/IDM style of music that he channels his impulses. His latest collection of songs has him revealing his talent on the guitar and bass as well, searching for the perfect balance between the organic and the digital world.
