In spite of being the son of a great connoisseur of Flamenco culture and amateur guitarist, Abel Sanchez did not. at first, follow in his father’s footsteps. However, since childhood, he always showed a keen interest in music and his most precious toys were musical instruments, whose secrets he would explore in solitude. He began playing guitar when he was fifteen. At seventeen he was participating in various projects still far removed from Flamenco. He was initiated into Flamenco by the master guitarist, Paco de Antequera, at the age of nineteen, and being an outstanding pupil, was chosen to accompany the Maestro at the end of course concert.Sadly, Paco died shortly afterwards, an event that consolidated Abel’s determination to carry on with Flamenco guitar, studying and teaching himself. He also received good advice from such great teachers as Pedro Escalona, Celia Morales, Pilar Alonso and Manolo Sanlucar. In 2003, along with the guitarist and musicologist Antonio Cintado, he created ‘Calambre’, his first Flamenco project. In 2005 he participated in the project ‘La Casa de los Tintes’ along with Joaquin Garcia, Javier Rodriguez, Pablo Ramos, Rafa Romero and Alex. Their aim was to widen the range of instruments usually assocciated with Flamenco, adding drums, tenor sax, flute, hanc (percussion) and electric bass, creating a sound reminiscent of Jazz Andaluz. Having knowledge of the school of modern Flamenco guitar, he searched for new forms of expression within a music that is as ancient as it is modern.Around this time too, Abel began to compose his own Flamenco music.Throughout all this time he combined his stage work with an ever deeper learning and a great deal of professional activity, diffusing Flamenco through municipal music schools, lectures at public schools, and offering classes to local associations for the underpriviledged as well as giving private classes.Playing solo he has shared billing with artists of such stature, as Fernando de la Morena, Potito, El Lebrijano, Jose Galan, Julian Estrada, Manuel Silveria...At the end of 2006 he formed his new band TLC (Contemporary Flamenco Trio) including the excellent musician and Flamenco connoisseur Javier Rodriguez on Sax and Flute and the dramatic and passionate percussion of Fran Nuñez from Malaga, who for 8 years of his extensive career has accompanied the dancer Carmen Mota with whom he has performed across half the world. At present his group play contemporary music composed by Abel and also deeply traditional Flamenco, often collaborating with other musicians.Abel Sanchez is committed and devoted to the world of Andaluz music and culture. All his determination and effort is dedicated to this work.
