Merrily playing in La Rustica high, the core of what would have been Mantram were frontman and wild guitar Daniele Russo, curious bass Mario Fratocchi, and the cool drumming of Laura Colarieti. It was fall 2001, all of them under 20 and covering songs from Offspring, Alien Ant Farm, Muse and Faith No More.Then came Giovanni “Mike†Lipford (2002), needing our boys a solo guitar to develop something newer and original. It was the turning point for this combo, being Mike a peculiar and very prolific songwriter. Results came announced: twice winners of the “Scuola Sounds Good†live bands competition as Best Rock band, and a furious session in the new auditorium hall in Rome.
In December 2003 time has come for a demo cd of three tracks (“The Demo Sessionsâ€).
This first recording experience denotes a fresh rock sound and a vague grunge attitude.The following year the live job grows more and more appreciated, and the aphex of it is the gig as headliners at the end-of-year concert of “Bottardi Institute†highschool, back in la Rustica, somewhat their hometown.
In October they open a concert for Assalti Frontali.2005 is a full year for the band, playing a good number of concerts in pubs and outdoor or city events like the Liberation concert organized by Rome’s Town Hall to celebrate April 25th :
Our boys play in front of more than 3000 people.July 22nd, 2005, is the release date of their second demo tape, “MantraM EPâ€; another three tracks, among them “Game Overâ€, a funky hard rock song well known by their live fans.
Live activities go on, meanwhile the band starts conceiving a more mature and heavy sound, blinking an eye to the alternative metal school scene. That’s probably why they are invited at Metal Massacre festival.Satisfaction, but also a little loss, since after many gigs together Febbe, their tour and fan club manager has to say goodbye for various commitments.After a full season of exhibitions, MantraM is a solid band, so, getting out of odd contacts with minor recording labels (“who just got smoke in our eyes…†states Mario), they decide to take a chance and record a full length album.
With the blessing partnership of producer Stefano Toni, their first discoverer in the old “Bottardi†times, they get together and enter the recording studio in march 2007.
“I have written more than 50 songs over these past years†says Mike.According to Mike “We certainly have achieved our personal style†probably due to the fact the band members admit to have very different and various influences among themselves (more heavy inspiration for Mike and Laura, more glam, pop and easygoing for Mario and Daniele), “fact is our music isn’t similar to anything I’ve heard beforeâ€.
“A very particular blend†echoes Laura.
The album was set to release in May 2007, but a more accurate recording and mixing work will delay it in September. The result will be “These 13 tracks of pure energy!...†comments Daniele sipping from a glass of Jack.
