Magnus Nyström Trio is guitarist/composer Magnus Nyström's new group. Here he teams up with drummer Per Anders Skytt and bassplayer Johannes Lundberg to perform his own very personal blend of eclectic and innovative jazz.
The songs you hear on this page are all part of a nine-piece suite with titles borrowed from a series of pictures on an Indian educational poster entitled Good Habits. It shows a model youngster of about nine or ten performing his daily tasks, starting with Early to Rise and ending, naturally, with Early to Bed. In between there are other obligations to be carried out, such as Daily Bath and School Going. This suite has now been released on CD by Imogena Records.
The Good Habits CD was recorded at Epidemin, a studio run by Henrik Cederblom and Johannes Lundberg who, as you may have noticed, is also the bassplayer of the trio. So he was on the two previous CD's with Magnus Nyström Band. Check these out on www.imogena.se too. They are both made with a quintet, adding two saxophones to the trio format. On the first, Kirkedam, the saxes are played by Johan Borgström and Johnny Enqvist, while the second, Tapto, features Joakim Rolandson and Björn Almgren.
"I feel very fortunate to have such exceptional musicians in my trio. Johannes is a very dynamic bass player; a forceful groove keeper as well as a lyrical soloist. He has a highly refined musical understanding, constantly providing inspiring input to compositions and improvisations. All of this can also be said of Per Anders. In addition he is a hard working, stubborn man who never gives up until his drumming exactly matches the intent of the song. In the case of my often all but obvious compositions, this is a very valuable asset. Both musicians possess all the qualities I appreciate in a band member: sensitivity, fearlessness, dedication and a great sense of humour." - Magnus Nyström
"I have always been a great fan of Magnus' music - truly one of Sweden's most exciting composers! His writing skill allows him to move effortlessly between jazz, rock and Indian classical music (to name but a few components). This fusion of many different musical styles results, paradoxically, in a final product which is refreshingly liberated from any isms and provides an ideal springboard for improvisation when searching for more than the mainstream!"
