Tarbox opened at the end of March 1997. With help from family, friends and Rebel Roofing Co, partners Dave and Mary Fridmann, Greg Snow, Andrea Wasiura and husband Steve, had Tarbox up and running in one month from closing. First project Flaming Lips Zaireeka. This studio offered a few beds, pots and pans where you could stay and fend for yourself in the middle of the woods. And a nice bunch of gear. 2nd act was Ammonia from Perth Australia wondering what the hell had they gotten themselves into? As they showed up in Buffalo, drove an hour to Fredonia and drove further into nowhere to end up on the dirt road called Tarbox.
Ten years later here we are. The road has been paved. We have made some nice records here. Met some nice folks. Paid off our debts. We had some critically acclaimed recordings Mercury Rev Deserter's Songs, Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin, Delgados The Great Eastern, Sparklehorse It's A Wonderful Life.. Grammys were handed out for Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Cafe Tacuba Cuatro Caminos, Flaming Lips At War With The Mystics. Dave himself was deemed "hot" and a Sonic Visionary by various publications including Rolling Stone and Mojo.
We have had Japanese acts such as Number Girl, Penguin Noise, Mass of The Fermenting Dregs come stay and record. Scottish acts Mogwai, Delgados, Dot Allison. Also Croatian band Pips Chips and Video Clips. French band Kaolin. From Mexico Cafe Tacuba. Irish singer Gemma Hayes. English band Goldrush, Ed Harcourt. Swedish Nicolai Dunger, etc. And wonderful US acts such Sleater-Kinney, Low, Sparklehorse, Phantom Planet, Thursday, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, MGMT, just to name a few. We have worked with a lot of our friends and a lot of people we have worked with have become our friends..
Ten years. Celebrity is annoying. Fanaticism is odd (how do you love someone you don't even know?). The record industry is confusing because they don't even seem to try and sell records; they are so busy trying to control uncontrollable things. Art is subjective. To one guy this is the best record ever. To another it is complete crap. The internet is not very old but has taken over our souls. Bloggers and online mags tell you what to think. I hear how people are too poor to buy a record but they are writing it on their 1000 dollar computer and their 30 to 50 dollar a month online connection. And to think an mp3 is a reasonable way to listen to music just makes me think you wouldn't buy a record under any circumstance anyway. Ten years. Not sure what next. -07
And. This myspace is not a portal to Dave. He cannot be contacted here. I am unsure why we have a myspace. At most just to have fun with it. Again Dave is not conducting business on myspace...
