Spleen is a rock-trio from Tilburg the Netherlands consisting of Tom Wolkers (vocals, guitar), Maarten van Trier (drums) and Rozan Martin (bass). Tom and Maarten also used to be in a band called Captain Moonlight. Rozan and Maarten already knew each other from the bands Mama Soulfood and Dish.
The band started on august 2006, as a wedding act which was such a success that the gentlemen decided to continue. They started performing and completed their first demo January 1st 2007. On the 22nd of March Spleen performed live on national television at the talkshow Pauw en Witteman. The music differs from bluesy ballads to funky rock songs. They were influenced by classics such as Velvet Underground Led Zeppelin and Cream, but also by Smashing Pumpkins, Beck and the Stereophonics.
The name Spleen derives from the ancient Greek: splen, which is the organ that produces and breaks down red blood cells and plays a part in the immune system. During the dark ages people thought this organ was the source of all the negative emotions like hatred and jealousy.
Later the word also got a poetical meaning. Especially the French (Beaudelaire) used spleen to describe a pleasant sadness. This theme is represented in the lyrics of Spleen. For 2007 Spleen has its mind set on becoming a smoking rock-act.Like Spleen? Get your piece of the action at SELLABAND.COM now!
