Gary Lee Frazier ( Singer / Songwriter )
Born : Johnstown . Penna.
Birthday : Sept. 10 , 1949
History :
The very thought of creating music has allways fascinated me . My Father and my uncles all loved music and played and sang the tunes of the old country singers.
I grew up in a home where guitars , fiddles , pianos , organs could be heard or played any time , and if some one was there to listen all the better.
Then in 1964 a song came on the radio from an English group ( Love Me Do ) The Beatles .
I knew right then I've got to write songs as good as they do. That was it. Every waking minute I'd be crafting a tune, learning from my mistakes and listening to the popular groups trying again and again to write songs that would give me the chills.
Finally a local radio station listened to my tapes and ask me to come in and make a tape in their studio. They had contacts with Warner records and believed I had a chance to "make it." All I could do was set on my hands and wait. They said we got a date with an A&R rep. We will be flying to California in two weeks. Man, I was numb, it was happening, really happening.
Then the station manager called like a week before we were to go to Warner records and said he got in a argument with people at Warner's and they called the deal off. Why! Why! It's all over now, what can I do?
Then when I was about 22 years old my good friend said, "let's go to Pittsburgh and make a demo." What! How! Yeah, my Friend Tom said, "I talked to a record studio and for $500.00 bucks they will make a '45' demo in the studio and we will get 500 copies." We did it ( Sunshine Merry Go Round and The Other Side Of Heaven ) and it turned out really good.
We made up demo packets and sent them to record companies and and and and heard nothing , and I prayed "Lord, why you gave me this talent , so if I can't use it what good is it!"
Well time, no, years, went by and I kept playing and thinking to myself, maybe some day a miracle will happen, yeah, a miracle.
That chance in a million never came. My two sons grew up, we did baseball , soccer, high school band, yet some where in the secret places of my being a hope lingered. I guess it's who you are, you can't change that. You can live and be happy, love your family, go to work and even love your job. But it's there -- the yearning to write songs, to play and sing for people, for strangers. You can't explain it and you can't let it go!
Well , the world was changing and with it came the new digital recorders and the internet and it has allowed me to share my music, albeit in a different way, on a different stage and I have to make all the things work, and I realize my days of youth are over, but the love to create songs is better now that the need to "make it" is not a factor. What is a singer songwriter if he has no one listening? If you are reading this then, well, then you must have been listening, and that is why I write songs ! Thanks for listening.
