This all started for Lee aka Leeroy Bambaataa at the tender age of 2 when he used to wake up every morning at his grandparents' house and head straight for the record player atop the chest of drawers and his uncles' collection of Police, Elvis, and Diana Ross records, to name just a few.He first discovered Hip-Hop round about '84 through what the media called breakdancing, or b-boying as it is affectionately known by the likes of the Rocksteady Crew.
When in town as a child, he would see groups of youths gathered in places like parks and Eastgate Shopping Centre, with ghetto-blasters and [probably] stolen rolls of linoleum. A short while later, he had to make do with a copy of Breakdance, hired for him by his Aunt, for which he is eternally grateful. He still is interested in many different types of music, with Hip-Hop still being his first love. As they say, if you like Hip-Hop, you pretty much like everything. His following into vinyl, was re-continued in '98 when he got hold of a Big Daddy Kane / Biz Markie re-issue, Schooly D's greatest hits, the Scratch Perverts compliation, B-Boys Revenge and the Beastie Boys Body Movin' 12" featuring a remix by Kutmasta Kurt featuring DJ Revolution. The first thing that caught his attention was the skratchin' on the Body Movin' remix, which if you listen to to this day is rythmically mind-blowing. How the hell does he do that he would say to himself, I want to do that!! It was once put to DJ Revolution by Leeroy, through none other than Myspace, when can we see a DJ battle featuring himself and the also legendary and regularly referred to as the greatest skratcher on earth DJ Q-Bert? "When Q relinqishes himself as a hermit" was the feedback received. The next thing to take hold was the art of Diggin', Big Daddy Magazine and sample finding. Many of his university days were spent searching through magazines and the internet, compiling wants-lists and then off to a local second-hand vinyl cavern. He was even fortunate enough on the odd occasion to track down an old O-Jays album or a shady comp with both Funky president AND Jungle Boogie. Then, [not strictly what you can call Diggin'] E-bay took a hold pretty quick. Nowadays he thinks it's gone way out of control and tends not to trade anywhere near as much, if at all, preferring to look through charity shops, car-boot sales, local ads or speaking to that nice lady who happens to be emigrating and is having a garage sale. But that's enough on giving up his diggin' sources. As Buckwild says "it's not like it's an everyday thing anymore".From the collection of vinyl that he has built over the years, he has been able to play his records at some of the local past and present Inverness venues, such as the former Blue Nightclub, Madhatters, The Room and the odd support slot or birthday party, and received a lot of good feedback. Leeroy's current work is mainly mixtape / internet-based, on Play FM as a member of the Music Is Life family and also Myspace, as a member of the Uniq Beat Collective. Offline his main sparring partner is G-Mo from Inverness. He has also DJ'd as part of the former Spirits of Vengeance crew based in Glasgow and provided the skratches for the erstwhile Beat-em Up Entertainment recordings, produced and executive-produced by Redragon. Just now, he prefers to deejay really for himself and close friends, whether it be at a local house-party or through his mixtapes. It was once put to him by the proprietor of a local venue that "by having highly developed, esoterical musical taste, it's only going to appeal to a certain amount of individuals in a smaller city like Inverness". Leeroy fully agrees and this is the reason why he'd rather be busy playing music he and other heads truly enjoy, rather than for the sake of filling a dancefloor and making someone a lot of money in alcohol sales. Still open to invitations to perform live whether it be a warm-up support, collabo night or party whether it be for a birthday, housewarming or whatever.
Last but not least, deejay influences are EVERYBODY [as mentioned before], anyone who is self-taught, or who has a love for music, particulary:Kool Herc the Father of Hip-Hop, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Ca$h Money, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinbad, Q-bert, Mixmaster Mike, Apollo and anyone else who's been an Invizibl Skratch Pikl, DJ Revolution, The En4cers, The Beat Junkies, The Scratch Perverts and their former members, DJ Krush, DJ Cam, Dee J A' la Fu and locally, Eamonn Coombes - big big shout outs for giving him his first taste of spinning live, G-Mo and Gow. There are far too many to list. Deejaying is the element of Hip Hop that Leeroy has personally chosen to pursue but it must be stressed that he has a huge love for the other 3 i.e. Emceein' Breakin' and Graffiti and holds massive respect for people like Goldie for example, who can deejay/produce, b-boy and write graffiti and Dooley O who can deejay/produce, emcee and write graffiti.Let him know if anyone knows of anyone out there who is famous for being established in all four. Thanks for taking the time to read through this totally unplanned mini-bio.
