It's all about the music

About Me

My name's Dave. I was born way back in 1973, which kinda makes me a Gen Xer, whatever that is. I remember as a kid listening to the radio - my local station was 3GL (on the WestCoast!), and they sponsored the Rubik's Cube race my Dad nearly won at the Geelong Show in 1980. Got a free 3GL t-shirt out of it, if I remember rightly. Sweet days. The radio was often on, but I didn't really start getting into music in any big way till I was around 17. I knew all the commercial hits in the 80s and could sing along with them, but then there were a couple of major events in my life in 1990 that changed the way I listened to music forever. Those events were both musical introductions, first of all to The Beatles thanks to Dad finally rescuing his Abbey Rd and Rubber Soul lps from his parents' place after many years' absence. These two brilliant LPs started an obsession I'm still stuck with 17 years later. The other was when my friend played a Kate Bush tape in his car while driving me around (mostly to the beach on sunny days). The tape was Hounds Of Love, and I was particularly taken by the second half, The Ninth Wave. Two obsessions began in the one year. Tough work for someone about to start on his VCE! At least when I was doing my homework the following year there was always great music to listen to.I love the way these obsessions led to others - for example listening to The Beatles, then Paul McCartney, then McCartney's collaborations with Elvis Costello, then getting into Elvis (Costello, that is), through him, discovering Ron Sexsmith... Things like that. Kate of course led to Tori Amos and, interestingly, David Bowie.Apart from these two cornerstones in my musical taste, there has been some independent growth by listening to my friends' musical choices and listening to independent radio - a big shout out to 3RRR right now because they're the best station in the world. If you want to know more about me, you can always look at my pictures by clicking the little picture someone once drew of me.

My Interests

Discovering new music that I'll love. Enjoying the company of good friends. Losing myself in a good book.

I'd love to meet my friends. It'd be cool to stop by after a live show and say hi. :)View Blog | View Pics | Add Comment

let's hear it for the girls!

This page is dedicated to the women I love.
Over the last couple of months, I've been celebrating the music of The Beatles, and bands who wore The Beatles' influence firmly on their sleeves. That was fun, but there's a whole bunch of other musicians I missed out who have been just as important to me and rank just as highly in my music collection.
Kate Bush is my favourite female singer. She opened doors for me musically that I never even knew were there. If Kate's just a name to you, I strongly recommend that you check out first of all her 1986 compilation The Whole Story, and then go through her catalogue.
The other singers and bands in my top friends are also well worth checking out.

Featured song is "Song No 6" by Ane Brun

The delightful Ane Brun hails from Norway. Her songs are mostly acoustic, and she's got one of those voices that you instantly fall in love with. Song No 6 is from her Duets album, and features one of my other favourite singers, Ron Sexsmith. This song's a real charmer and always makes me smile.

I play: alto sax, clarinet, piano, guitar
I listen to: Apart from the people on my Friends list, there are some that I haven't quite managed to hook up with on MySpace. These include Tori Amos, Clare Bowditch & The Feeding Set, PJ Harvey, Neil Young, and others...

Doctor Who, RocKwiz, Lost, Kath & Kim
