The Shabazz Center

The Malcolm X & Dr.Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center

About Me

MISSION STATEMENT:The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center is a 501[c]3 that honors the legacies of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz by promoting human and civil rights through knowledge of the culture and history of the African Diaspora, education and self-empowerment; family values, and facilitating racial and relgious reconcillation.Since February 2007, the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center [the Shabazz Center]has been sponsoring programs that root the social justice struggles of today within the powerful history of activism exemplified through the life work of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz. CREATING THE LEGACY:In 1995 Dr. Betty Shabazz set about to found an institution that would permit the courageous work of her late-husband El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz – Malcolm X to continue into the 21st Century. With support from the community Dr. Shabazz was able to negotiate an agreement to retain up to 40% percent of original Audubon Ballroom. The Shabazz Center, was formally established in May 2005 as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation.Today the Shabazz Center has been redesigned. The new 6000 sq foot space is the contemporary vision of the renowned architect Max Bond of Davis Brody Bond and the Audubon’s original 1912 design by Thomas Lamb. Three major works of art by artists Colin Chase, Gabrielle Koran, and Daniel Galvez are part of its permanent collection... .. ..
