1997... Thessaloniki (Greece) is the Cultural Capital of Europe for the year. And, somewhere in eastern district, three friends and musicians decide to form a "different" band. Different than whatever bands they had participated in the previous years. Different than "rock". Different than straight, 4/4, verse-refrain-solo songs. More happy, uplifting, fun to begin with, but not "candy pop"-ish. At least, that was the intention. What they came up with, was an instrumental rock/funk hybrid, very raw but very melodic and rhythmic at the same time. And, thus, Babtua Cuctua was officially born in early 1997 (first rehearsals at late 1996).
The band began composing songs at an astonishing rate, considering the complexity and difficultness of the compositions, and soon they had enough to even get them a gig. But the lack of vocals kept them postponing such an event (in essence, they created songs with the intention to "fit in" lyrics later on, after they had managed to find a suitable vocalist - something that never happened). The next step was to record a three-track demo tape, on the first days of 1998, at Q Studio (now a subdivision of RunDevilRun Records ).
And then, suddenly, it was over! For some '"soapy" (somenone liked this term!) reasons there was a bitterness among the two out of the three-piece and so the band just dissolved into thin air. But, they left behind some original masterpieces in the form of a 3-track demo and numerous studio rehearsal recordings. They, themselves, like to think of them now as "melodic and rhythmic studies for guitar-bass-drums", soaked, nevertheless, in true passion and commitment.
This very site is a tribute for the 10th birthday anniversary of the most underrated (and unknown!) band of Thessaloniki, Babtua Cuctua.
