Artist Statement~Fire 1/09/2008 On Rescues

The Book of Truth, Lovers and Demons, and Mama-San were painted over a two- week period in 2007 as part of a series called “13 paintings”. All were painted simultaneously.

In 2004, I began finding abandoned paintings left in the trash on the streets of Boston and Cambridge, I religiously began finding and collecting the canvases and started a process of painting over them- but leaving remnants of the old work in tact as an homage to the original piece. All of the paintings in this show are what I call “Rescues”.

The Mourners was created in 1995 and comes from a series of paintings I call “Angels and Superheroes”. I have had an ongoing fascination with the omniscient power of TV superheroes and have used those characters freely as a form of escapism in my paintings. In this body of work from the 90s, the protagonists (Angels) and antagonists, (Sadistiks) enter into the classic Battle of Good vs. Evil. This series of work was recognized by a juried entry into the 1995 Viridian Gallery Show for emerging artists in NYC. ~
