Dirt Fest began in 1997 as a way for founder Kurt Gust to showcase his band GrAsS and laid the groundwork for what was to become one of the Mid-west’s top independent entertainment events. In 1998 local promoter Matt Dalton partnered with Gust.
In 2000 Gust pursued school and left the responsibility of Dirt Fest to Dalton. The event picked up momentum as more and more artists saw Dirt Fest as a means to expose themselves to an increasing statewide audience. To meet the demand, Dalton chose to offer three stages of music and so, Dirt Fest outgrew its birthplace in the local community park and was relocated to the newly built Birch Run Expo Center.
For the 10th anniversary experience in 2006 Dalton partnered with longtime friend and entertainment consultant, Dan Coleman. The 10th Annual Dirt Fest hosted over 75 bands including; The Black Dahlia Murder, Mae, Silverstein, Halifax, Every Time I Die, See You Next Tuesday and many more. A BMX stunt show, public skate course and over 100 vendors and concessionaires polished off an unprecedented experience. The result gained widespread attention including mention media outlets such as MTV and Alternative Press magazine. It has since been compared to events such as Warped Tour, Hellfest, and The Bamboozle. In 2007 Dirt Fest, LLC was formed to oversee the future of Dirt Fest.
