My musical influences over the years have been wide and varied. They include past and present musical and historical legends, key people in my life, special and magical places as well as the challenges which have helped me to grow and develop into the person and musician I am today.Born in Peckham, the tropics of south London, I was six when my brother Pete Gordelier (who use to play bass for Angel Witch) got me interested in playing guitar. Jeff Beck and the legend Hendrix were my initial sources of inspiration and led to me spending hours teaching myself cords and riffs. This soon led to me playing along to records records like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep.To my delight at the age of 11yrs I discovered I had a natural aptitude at playing the drums-!! o appy dayz! And become the beat boy for my brothers, Chris and Pete Gordeliers' in the Blue Ice Band in 1977. After joining lots of different set ups at school, me and a couple of pals formed OTR (Off The Rails). We were the resident school band playing rock and MOD covers like the Jam, The Who, Secret Affair and so on.
In my late teens, early twenties I moved onto working some sessions with a dude called Sam Flynn, rehearsing in a small stanky studio in Catford south east London. It was a mix of punk, rock and jazz which we played live at the Heaven Club in Charing Cross.Mid twenties and another project, this time with brother Chris and pal Malcolm Davis. We called ourselves Pooka. However, I had applied to go to Australia around this time so didn't stay with this for long. As soon as I got to Oz I stuck my nose in the local paper and found a covers band to get me going. However, myself and the singer soon moved on to form our own band called Thunder Road. Members were, Clark Scott, vocal, Mark Headey, bass, Johnny Bigalow, Guitar ,(replaced soon after by Kim Khor) myself on guitar and last but not least Ricky Van Koke on Drums. To say we were loud and proud is and understatement. We toured a bit before splitting around the early nineties. Ouch! When I returned to blighty I joined my brother Chris (who by the way is a fab singer) in his band with, pal Malcolm on bass and acoustic guitar, and Donna Cater on keyboard to form Asher Wallfish. This turned into a real goth-tas-tic trip playing goth nights at the Powerhouse in London supporting Nosferatu. We eventually split, (by now your thinking , dam dis boys a jinx) and I moved on and joined Vlad Janicek and a brick layer called Chris, both from Nosferatu, in the band that Vlad had formed called Shadow Maker. We played the Marquee Club in London and Nottingham Rock City but that was about it for me.In the last 10yrs or so I've been writing and recording by myself, (safer! You're probably thinking), bringing in help and writing partners for what was The Leon Project, like Chris Gordelier, vocals and lyrics; Richie Woods, vocals and lyrics; Dave Cavill of Voodoo Six unbelievable drums; Malcolm Davis, bass; Rik Kew, bass and Pete James also on bass. More recently I have recorded a track with the assistance of Flo, Dele and Folu, which to the amazement of some has a distinctly gospel flavour- a far cry from those early days. My music covers a range of styles and my songs are often very different to each other. You can hear a few tracks from my 'World Portals' album on this site. I hope you like it, let me know what you think and if you would like to hear more you can request a copy, for a small fee, of course, of the album by sending me a message or comment. So what next? Who knows...I would like to write backing tracks for films or TV any takers??
Well, thats it for this trip down amnesia lane. If I remember anything along the way I'll let you know.Peace, love and good happiness stuff,
Pauly.
