When asked about his musical influences, Release simply says everything, all genres and every style. “I use rap as my release, I’ve always wrote, I would write about life, just random shit that would be on my mind.â€
Release began turning his words into rhyme when he was about 16 and at 19 he decided to enroll in an Entertainment Management course at Trebas Institute in Toronto. While studying the business of the industry, Release was also mastering his craft of word play and story telling. It was at the schools weekly pub night / open mic where Release first performed to a packed crowd as if he had done it many times in the past. He instantly gained interest from producers and respect from other MC’s alike. He even got some groupie love.
While at Trebas, Release was introduced to the harmonica and started jamming at school in the halls and out side on the street. When his grandfather was put in the hospital, Release realized that playing harmonica was the same as rapping, it helped give a sense of relaxation and comfort. The same thing he used to seek from drugs and alcohol. “Depression and anxiety is a daily struggle for me and I’ve learnt to not shut myself out from the world but instead, go about my daily plans and filter that pain through music.†Coming from a broken home has made it more difficult for him in all aspects of life but to Release it is only another chapter within the book of life.
Release has developed a unique style of story telling with head nodding flows complimentary to the accompanying music. His songs are often left for the listener to apply to their own situation. Performing is another area that Release has managed to make a statement. Since his first time touching the mic on stage, Release has been performing across the city developing a dynamic stage show that entertains and engages the audience. Not only does he have fun, it is clear that he has a message and the audience clearly enjoys the chance of interpreting it. Release refers to his music as a “Cleansing of the soulâ€, and hopes that his music will be felt by the souls of others. For every dark mood there is a lighter one, every story of anger brings stories of love and for everything understood there are still questions and for Release, music is the answer.
