RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE: A TIME LINE[1991] Rage Against The Machine give their first public performance, in a living room in Orange County, California.[1992] Rage release self-produced 12-song cassette. It includes the original version of "Bullet In The Head," later included on Rage's Epic debut album. Each band member has duct tape across his mouth and a letter scrawled on his chest, spelling out "P-M-R-C."09/11/93 Rage headline sold-out Anti-Nazi League benefit at Brixton Academy in London, England. Supporting acts include Lush, Senser, Headswim and Green Apple Quickstep. Rage headlines a bill including Cypress Hill, Quicksand, Mother Tongue, X and Stanford Prison Experiment, with guest appearance by the Beastie Boys. A check for $75,235.91 is later presented to the Leonard Peltier Defense Fund.10/22/94 Rage play "Latinpalooza," a joint benefit for the Leonard Peltier Defense Fund, the United Farm Workers, and Para Los Niños at Grand Olympic Grounds, Los Angeles, CA. Also appearing: Cypress Hill, Lighter Shade Of Brown, Fobia, Little Joe Y La Familia, and Thee Midnighters.12/30/94 Higher Learning, the soundtrack from the film directed by John Singleton, is released on Epic Soundtrax. It features a new Rage track, "Year Of Tha Boomerang," which is later included on Evil Empire.08/17/94 Rage Against The Machine is certified platinum for sales of one million copies. The album also certified platinum in Canada, UK, France, Belgium, and Chile; double platinum in New Zealand; and gold in Germany, Denmark, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Australia.08/13/95 Rage organize and headline a benefit concert at the Capitol Ballroom, Washington DC. The show raises more than $8,000 for the International Concerned Friends and Family of Mumia Abu-Jamal. The two-song performance is cut to one song when the band attempts to hang inverted American flags from their amplifiers.04/14/96 Rage video for "Bulls On Parade," directed by Peter Christopherson, premiers on MTV's "120 Minutes."04/16/96 Evil Empire, the second album by Rage Against The Machine, is released on Epic Records.04/20/96 Rage play a free concert at the Velodrome at California State University, Dominguez Hills CA.05/03/96 Rage begin a headlining European tour in Madrid.05/04/96 Evil Empire enters the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at Number One with a bullet.06/16/96 Rage play the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco CA. The two-day event draws a sell-out crowd of over 100,000.the largest U.S. benefit concert since Live Aid in 1985, according to event producers Bill Graham Presents. Proceeds go to the Milarepa Fund, a San Francisco non-profit group working for the cultural survival of Tibet.

(2) Evil Empire is certified platinum for US sales of more than one million copies.09/04/96 Rage begin a West Coast headlining tour in San Jose, CA with dates through 10/10/96.01/04/97 Two songs from Evil Empire, "Bulls On Parade" and "Tire Me," are nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Metal Performance respectively in the 38th Annual Grammy Awards sponsored by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.01/08/97 Rage Against The Machine is certified double platinum for US sales of over two million copies.01/20/97 More than 50 US commercial radio stations carry the two-hour debut of "Radio Free LA." The broadcast includes two live sets by a band comprised of Tom Morello (guitar), Zack de la Rocha (vocal), Flea (bass, of Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Steven Perkins (drums, of Porno For Pyros). Their sets include versions of "Down Rodeo," "Vietnow," "Tire Me," "People Of The Sun," "Bulls On Parade," and "Year Of The Boomerang." Rage's net earnings from these performances are donated to a group of activist organizations, including Friends & Family of Mumia Abu-Jamal, FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting), the National Commission for Democracy in Mexico, FZLN (Zapatista Front For National Liberation), and Women Alive.08/21/97 In West Palm Beach, Florida, Rage begin a headlining US tour with special guests Wu-Tang Clan. The Wu withdraw from the tour after just one week of shows. Foo Fighters and The Roots, among others fill subsequent support slots.10/30/97 Evil Empire is certified double platinum for US sales of over two million copies.11/25/97 Rage release a self-titled full-length home video that includes concert footage, non-album songs, and full-length uncensored versions of the band's controversial music videos. The home video comes with a bonus CD single, a new Rage studio recording of Bruce Springsteen's "The Ghost of Tom Joad."12/13/97 In Santa Monica, California, Rage's Tom Morello is arrested during civil disobedience in a "March Of Conscience" against sweatshop labor. The arrests are a protest by garment workers and their supporters against sweatshop abuses by Guess? Inc. In the same week, advertisements appear on billboards and bus shelters in Las Vegas and New York reading. A caption under a photo of the band reads: "Rage Against Sweatshops: We Don't Wear Guess?! The band makes its first ever appearance on "Late Night With David Letterman" (CBS network), performing "Guerrilla Radio" live on the streets of midtown Manhattan.11/10/99 The Battle of Los Angeles debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Albums chart.11/25/99 Rage is the subject of a Rolling Stone cover story written by David Fricke.12/03/99 The Battle of Los Angeles is certified double platinum for US sales of two million copies.04/11/00 Rage Against The Machine win five California Music Awards for Outstanding Guitarist (Tom Morello), Outstanding Hard Rock Album (The Battle of Los Angeles), Outstanding Group, Artist of the Year (a fan write-in vote), and the annual Arthur Sohcot Award for Public Service.08/15/00 Outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Rage plays a 40-minute free concert on the first night of the Democratic National Convention. The set includes a cover of "Kick Out the Jams," a song performed by the MC5 at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago.09/08/00 At the MTV Video Music Awards at New York's Radio City Music Hall, Rage perform "Testify" from The Battle Of Los Angeles while footage from the "Testify" video (directed by Michael Moore) plays on monitors behind the band. Later in the show, Rage bassist Tim Commerford climbs a fifteen-foot stage prop behind the podium as Limp Bizkit accept their award for Best Rock Video. He is arrested, handcuffed, and later charged with assault and resisting arrest.09/12-13/00 Rage Against The Machine play what turn out to be their final shows together, at the Olympic Grand Auditorium in Los Angeles. B-Real and Sen Dog of Cypress Hill join Rage for a version of the Cypress Hill hit "How I Could Just Kill a Man." The shows are recorded for a planned live album.10/19/00 Zack de la Rocha announces that he is leaving Rage Against The Machine. In a statement, Zack says that the band's "decision-making process has completely failed&It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band and, from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideal. I am extremely proud of our work, both as activists and musicians, as well as indebted and grateful to every person who has expressed solidarity and shared this incredible experience with us."The remaining Rage members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk issue their own statement later the same day. "We're proud of our history and what we've accomplished musically and politically over the last nine years," the statement reads. "We are committed to continuing with our efforts to effect change in the social and political arena and look forward to creating more ground breaking music for our fans. In other words, we'll keep it loud, keep it funky and most definitely rock on&"12/05/00 Renegades, the fourth album by Rage Against The Machine, is released on Epic Records. Produced by Rick Rubin, Renegades is a collection of songs originally written and recorded by such artists as the MC5 ("Kick Out The Jams"), Bob Dylan ("Maggie's Farm"), the Rolling Stones ("Street Fighting Man"), Minor Threat ("In My Eyes"), and "Renegades of Funk" (Afrika Bambaataa). The initial pressing of Renegades includes two bonus live tracks, "Kick Out The Jams" and "How I Could Just Kill a Man," recorded during Rage's final shows at the Olympic Grand Auditorium in Los Angeles.01/12/01 Renegades is certified platinum for sales of more than one million copies.02/20/01 The Battle of Mexico City, a new DVD by Rage Against The Machine, is released on Epic Records. The DVD includes the full-length concert and video journal of the band's trip to Mexico City, which Tom Morello calls "one of the musical and political highlights of our career& an amazing time in our lives that we were fortunate to have documented."02/21/01 In the 43rd annual Grammy Awards, Rage wins the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance "Guerrilla Radio," a track from The Battle of Los Angeles.04/29/01 Tom Morello is voted Best Guitarist for the fourth consecutive year at the 24th Annual California Music Awards. Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown presents Tom with the award.05/20/01 The Los Angeles Times reports that former Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell has officially joined Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk in a new, still-unnamed band. Peter Mensch of Q-Prime Management (representing the three former Rage members) and Cornell's manager Jim Guerinot both confirm that the four musicians have written 20 songs together and have begun recording an album with producer Rick Rubin.TO BE CONTINUED...
