Electric Bass/Acoustic Guitars/Composition

About Me

I first picked up the guitar age 8 influenced by my sister who was learning classical and folk tunes. At age thirteen I switched to bass inspired by a chance meeting with Neville Malcolm ( a monster of a player and all round big hearted human) who played at the local penticostal church with my cousin. We became firm friends and would spend hours jamming and listening to his burgeoning jazz and fusion record collection of mainly American artist, although we would always look up to and embrace the Black Bristish Jazz funk pioneers like Light of the World, Incognito and Central Line some of whom lived locally.I turned professional at 19 and continued playing in bands and teaching in local schools and colleges and spent the next decade immersed in London’s black music scene with a 3 year stint as a member of Izit and sessions for incognito, Alison Limerick, Ragga Twins, QRZ and visiting Jazzfunk pioneer Ronnie Laws to name a few.During this period I took a hiatus from playing Bass due to a niggling neck injury received years earlier in a car accident. This would impair my ability to play pain free over a sustained period, i.e. a long touring schedule. For comfort I turned back to the Acoustic guitar and over the next few years began discovering my voice on that instrument. I instinctively tuned the acoustic in 4ths like a bass and then started experimenting with lots of new tunings. In more recent years I have been raising Kids and working for a homeless charity. I still play bass mainly in the studio and when I play live I prefer to sit down Anthony Jackson Style, although this doesn’t always go down well with many bandleaders.I am always on the lookout for projects that vibrate with the right Frequency & Intention and over the last couple of years I have been lucky enough to record with a wonderful singer songwriter Amy Newton and work on a collaborative project with Sweet Doll East an 8 piece Chinese all girl ensemble playing traditional instruments.Currently I am chipping away at my second Album in the Songs Without Words series.
