The Sanitarium was established in the summer of 2006. The brainchild of Cathal Hasson, The Sanitarium came about as a result of a lack of somewhere for Derry rockers to go and enjoy a night out while being able to hear good rock music. The rock scene had been steadly gathering momentum over the previous few years and excellent live music events such as the Lowdown, run by Triggerman's Bap were keeping the flag flying for rock in the city. However what was lacking was somewhere, where people could gather, meet old fiends and hear some of their favourite tunes, old and new. Anyone who knows Derry can testify, The city has ample venues packed full of the "beautiful people" listening to the crap that passes for popular music, while good rock venues were at a premium. It didnt take long to decide Masons would be the ideal Venue to host the Sanitarium. Masons was the natural choice once it became clear that the venue was available, and what made matters better is that Masons had been the traditional home of the Derry Rock Community. However over a number of years ownership of the bar had changed hands on several occasions and the bar wasnt exactly the hive of activity it had once been. This was all to change over the course of a year with Peter Campbell(owner)taking a more active intrest in the regeneration of Mason. The Sanitarium Proudly has the honour of being the First of the Rock nights to return to the famous Bar. Once the Bar had ben confirmed as an appropriate venue, It was down to coming up with a handle for yet Un-named rock night. Despite toying with several ideas, Saturday Sanitarium was the initial name which the rock night was given(The early nights were held on Saturday's) The name Sanitarium is obviously inspired by the Metallica song-however, its the sub title (welcome home) which stood out, Welcome Home signifying the return to Masons for rockers after a long time away. The First Saturday Sanitarium took place in July 2007 and was DJ'd by John'Kellz'Kelly and was a roaring success. The door money from that first Sanitarium was donated to the National Institute for Deaf Children. Such was the success of that 1st Sanitarium, it as decided it should be a regular feature in the rock calender. When Billy Campbell joined the Masons team in January, the Sanitarium moved from its Saturday night slot to It now familiar last friday of every month. The Sanitarium has taken off in a big way and we look forward to a long successful future. We're always lookin for new ideas for the Sanitarium, so feel free to offer suggestions. In 2007 we'll be including local (From Derry and throughout Ireland) bands in our play list, so if you have a band and fancy having your tunez played to the rocking masses, get in touch and we'll give your offering a spin. Recordings have to be decently produced and on CD. We always welcome bands to forward us material, and let the crowd be the judge
