I am a Scottish storyteller and poet living in Galway. My speciality is folktales from Scotland and Ireland, including stories from the medieval period as well as modern urban legends, and also the tales passed down over the generations of my family. These tales of magic, murder, romance, adventure and mayhem feature the men, women and children excluded from the great narratives of history: fisher folk, railway workers, boy soldiers, women in wartime, factory workers, farm labourers…
I perform in schools, libraries and festival including Slieve Bloom, Múscailt, and Spirit of the Voice. My clients include the College of William and Mary, Princeton University Alumni Association and Europäische Märchengesellschaft (European Society for Folktales) amongst many others.
My storytelling partner Clare Murphy and I use storytelling workshops to create fun ways for people to build bridges between the many groups in Galway City. we have also created a unique set of workshops to help disadvataged children and adults build up their confidence in self expression, develop the skill of positive criticism, and learn all about unleashing their imaginations through the magic of creating and telling stories.
I have just finished a highly successful five day show in the Town Hall Theatre studio, Galway. DARK TALES featured frightening tales with gallons of gore and a twist of dark. I am now taking DARK TALES on the road.
In 2007 the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíona awarded a Deis Award to Clare and I to fund a 6 month research and performance project for Galway City Museum. A video archive of these stories is now online at Storytellers Unlimited
I can be booked to perform or teach by contacting me at [email protected] / tel: 00353 (0) 87 654 5411. I do workshops and/or shows for adults, children or mixed groups.
Whilst I do storytelling for everybody from children upwards, my literary work is more for the adults. My work has featured in Books Ireland, www.blinkzine.com, Burning Bush, Chapman, Criterion, Cutting Teeth, Cyphers, Faslane Focus, The Guardian, The Herald, horror.about.com, www.indymedia.ie, New Writing Scotland, Northwords, Orphan Leaf Review, Peace News, Poetry Ireland Review, Poetry London Newsletter, Poetry Scotland, The Shop, textualities.net, West Coast Magazine, West 47...

My Interests

I love exploring the Irish countryside, but being outside in any weather any where is fine by me...

I'd like to meet:

I'm happy to blether away to anybody, but i'm definetly looking to meet up with more storytellers, writers, creative people.

Music:

Mostly anybody who i bump into who has an instrument. I cannae play anything myself, or sing, but will croak merrily if given enough alcohol and encouragement

Movies:

eh, probably Close Encounters Of The Third Kind or Bedknobs And Broomsticks. Basically anything I watched when I wiz a wean. There used ti be a cinema when I wis wee thit aw thi weans were corralled inty on a saturday morning. It showed the auld Flash Gordon serials and then cheapo B movies. The two I mind best were wan aboot a fella wae suction pumps oan his knees thit climbed up buildings, n another aboot a submarine thit could fly. Oh ay, n a love the auld black n white horror pictures - thi wans wae thi werewolf aye get mi a wee bit emotional....

Television:

Ah dinnae watch much TV at all. But ah aye keep a look oot for FRAZIER and CSI:MIAMI. Personally I think FRAZIER should actually get a job in CSI:MIAMI, as a criminal profiler, perhaps.... Or maybe he could give counselling sessions to the scriptwriters who seemed to have went a bit mad lately

Books:

At the moment i'm reading Robert Louis Stevenson's 'The Master on Ballintrae' I also like checking out writing and news on the web. My favourite sites are: Blinkzine , textualities , An Leabhar Mor , Refusing To Kill , indymedia , Shell To Sea! , Residents Against Racism , biofuelwatch .

Heroes:

damn few, n thur aw deid!
