November 14, 2006BY John OtterstedtJeff Billingsley was watching Rutgers defeat then 3 Louisville on national television from the office of his Newark-based record label Cobblestone Records when something came over him. He had to be there. Not later. Now.So Billingsley jumped in the car with two of his recording artists, Slimm Chance (26) and Mic Caine (24), and headed down to New Brunswick. They didn't catch the end of the game, but the enthusiasm they saw on and around the campus left an impression that they wouldn't soon forget."I came down after the game because I wanted to feel what the energy was like and how the people were responding to the success that the football team was having," said Billingsley. "We were on Easton Avenue, the street was blocked off, and were giving out CD's when suddenly we saw some of the players coming down the road."After soaking up the atmosphere – and watching the fans embrace the Scarlet Knights – inspiration struck."The artists (Slimm Chance and Mic Caine) came back to me and said 'We have to do a song, we have to do a song!'"With that, they were off. The car ride home and the rest of the night were spent brainstorming ideas and planning for a song that they hoped to debut a short time later – a very short time later."We got an 18 year old producer named Roc to produce it the next day," said Billingsley. "All original. No samples. They picked up the track, picked up the lyrics, and recorded it in an hour."Then came the return trip to New Brunswick, this time with a stack of "Rutgers Anthem" CD's. The first two stops were the Golden Rail and Harvest Moon, two places where they were bound to find Rutgers students on a busy Saturday night. From there they headed over to several other New Brunswick hot spots, including the famed grease trucks."To make a long story short, the feedback was crazy," said Billingsley. "They were even playing it out of the grease trucks. People were responding to it immediately. We gave out the copies to whoever we saw – students, alumni, whoever. As soon as we got back [to the office], we put it on the myspace page."It didn't take long for the scarletnation.com faithful to find the audio file at the cobblestonerecords.com web site. It has been downloaded by nearly 3,000 fans since Sunday."It's just amazing because the beat is great and the lyrics are creative and fitting....and at the same time, it's about something that we love," said Rutgers student Seth Anagnostis. "It makes you think about the season and the Louisville game in particular and gets you excited to watch this team again."The song has even spread beyond the insulated confines of the Rutgers fan message boards."It is good to see Rutgers fever spreading throughout the state and into the music industry," said Saddle Brook High School football coach, David Schuman. "GO RU!"The early buzz created by the song has been gratifying to Billingsley on several levels. For starters, he is happy his company could honor a college football team that he says is truly making the state proud. He also is excited because it was created by members of another program that he holds dear to his heart, The Ceasefire All Stars, a Rutgers-sponsored non-profit group aimed at teaching at-risk children that there are alternatives to violence. Their message is reinforced by introducing kids to the music industry and mentoring them as they learn the various components of the business."We work with young people and teach them about the music business, teaching them that you can have a positive message with music without it being corny," said Billingsley. The Ceasefire All Stars tour the state, performing and spreading their positive message to children and teens. Billingsley says that the Rutgers Anthem will undoubtedly be added to the group's set list."Everybody knows that Rutgers is real big right now. Because Ceasefire is a Rutgers project, it all just fits."
