Pinole, California, Michael Spencer is poised to garner the love and respect from his musical contemporaries and audiences, worldwide. He’s also assured to break a few female hearts with his boy-next-door good looks and charm. This talented twenty three-year-old, with vocal pipes that hearken back to some of soul music’s greatest, has been singing since the very tender age of two. Yes, that’s right, two years of age — singing with the renowned California State Choir. Like the majority of soul stars, Michael was a bona-fide church boy. He grew up singing in a family musical group spearheaded by his Grandmother called the Simonettes--which led to his participation in various choirs and showcases throughout the State of California. This helped him to hone his voice, and he eventually began to explore and perfect the craft of songwriting. With the positive experiences of growing up aside, Michael also suffered some severe losses at a young age: the death of his mother to cancer and the loss of his father to the penal system. Seemingly enough to daunt even the strongest person's spirit, Michael’s incredible buoyancy enabled him to use those situations to propel him forward on his quest to become a singer. He shares, “I feel like those losses encourage me even more. When my mom was alive, she always wanted me to sing. And with my dad not being there, I want him to still be able to say that I made something of myself. I want to make them proud, and, in doing that, it keeps them in my life.†Michael is a young talent with somewhat of an old soul. Even though he enjoys many of today’s R&B and hip-hop artists, his true passion lays for the icons from the Golden Age of Soul Music, such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Aretha Franklin. Through his own music, he is personally determined to carry the torch of those soul greats. “I want to create music that does more than make people dance, I want to make people think,†he exclaims. Michael also has an appreciation for other musical genres, including pop, alternative rock and country, and “wishes to incorporate a lot of those styles and sounds into his own music,†he says. Things have begun to move quite rapidly for Michael’s burgeoning music career. He has recorded and collaborated with a bevy of notable producers from Flyte Tyme’s Chase & Grant, to RichE Blaze (Diane Warren), to Shep Crawford’s Drop Squad (Deborah Cox, Tamia, Whitney Houston). Also, he was signed to a production deal and has recorded with JR Hutson of Lifeline Entertainment (Mike Phillips, Boyz II Men, Faith) and, receiving Don Cornelius’s personal endorsement, he joined the elite few that have been given the opportunity to perform on the nationally syndicated Soul Train without being signed to a major deal. And if that wasn’t enough, Mike just recently made an appearance on the now televised Tom Joyner morning show. Michael’s goals are plain and simple: to be one of the world’s top recording artists. “I’m young, but I have a more mature sound,†he says.“I can relate to both the young crowd and an older crowd. Hopefully, people won’t be able to categorize me. My goal is to have a few albums under my belt, travel the world and headline a major tour — maybe even win a Grammy. I believe I’m really ready for all of this. The best part of my life right now is that I’m pursuing my dreams and doing exactly what I want to do. You can’t beat that!â€
