Val D'Alessio

Bluesy, Satirical tenderness, Captivating Guitar

About Me

Val D'Alessio simultaneously dusts off the forgotten corner of your heart, fills it with a bluesy, satirical tenderness, and leaves you with an emotional honesty that holds you like a living room rocking chair.Growing up in rural Maine, Val began, at the age of 10, curiously experimenting with homemade guitars, handmade microphones and developing her soulful bluesy voice. Over the years, she has continued to persue her singing and guitar playing with the same kind of ingenuity, originality, and quirky playfulness. In her teens, intriged by the earthy quality of the acoustic guitar, Val set off on a diverse musical journey that brought her to artists such as Mississippi John Hurt, Rory Block, Bruce Coburn and other country blues and fingerstyle guitarists. Her passion for acoustic music and performing, lead her to join various folk, country blues and contemporary musical projects, where she continued to hone her skills. After moving to Bellingham WA, Val joined the acoustic pop band "Men Without Pants" singing harmony and playing lead guitar. Her experience performing with the band, as well as years of honing her musicianship, culminated in an intense outpouring of personal, witty, and inovative new songs. These new gems were later released in 2000 on her solo debut CD, "Home, Highways, and Bad Hairdays". This solo acoustic release established here as one of the finest singer/songwriters in the Seattle area. She is currently working on a new C.D. which is scheduled for release in March of 2007.Val has been steadily gaining recognition for her guitar driven award winning songwriting abilities. She received first place, in the WCLZ Songwriting Contest in Portland, Maine, and was recorded by Alan Williams(producer for Dar Williams). Her song was included on the "Bridges" CD, a compilation of Maine artists and received regular airplay. In 1998 Val was a finalist in the Lake Forrest Songwriting contest, held in Washington State.Val is an active member of the national touring network, "Indie Girl", and is a founding member of the Seattle Performing Songwriters Collective. Sounds Like: I am told that my voice reminds people of Bonnie Raitt and Nancy Griffith. My guitar playing is reminiscent of James Taylor and various country blues players like Rev.Garry Davis and Mississipee John Hurt.
