"...a propulsive, precision instrument of superb melodic power... see 'em live at the nearest opportunity." - Real Groove magazine
Driving beats, distinctive riffs and delicious horns combine to push the envelope in The WBC's debut album Hi-Fidelity Offbeat. The love child of The Specials, two of the five Spice Girls, and 311, The WBC are an evolution in the lineage of New Zealand music that crystallizes two of our most accomplished and distinct traditions: dub and rock. With a stonking live set featuring a full horn section and huge electric guitars, it is little wonder that this seven-piece force is shaking Kiwi hips from the roots up.
Like other breakthrough acts over the last few years, The WBC cut their teeth performing at standout annual festivals such as Rhythm and Vines, the Queenstown Winter Festival, Beach Day Out, University Orientations and the Grey Lynn Festival. This base of fans has allowed them to tour the country regularly, exposing virgin ears to their melodic mayhem.
However, with touring comes responsibility; Earlier this year Rip It Up voiced concern over the lack of availability of their music, urging its readers to ..all pray their debut album isn't too far off... Recently the band answered their call by releasing Hi-Fidelity Offbeat to cries of relief in the national scene and excited acclaim from wider circles.
It is this rich history that has caught the attention of the international music community. Their nods to the fusion that occurred when Jamaicans began recording their own version of American Blues in the 1960s has seen them play alongside such ska greats as Reel Big Fish, Coolie Ranx, and the seminal British band Bad Manners.
Demonstrating their diverse appeal, The WBC have also lent their talents to local hip hop stars Nesian Mystik, Fast Crew and Chong Nee on their studio recordings, as well as performing alongside other Kiwi greats such as Salmonella Dub, Kora, The Black Seeds, and Katchafire.
The debut album Hi-Fidelity Offbeat is available now in all good record stores.
