Gregory Oliver Hines (February 14, 1946 – August 9, 2003) was an actor, singer, musician, choreographer, director, and dancer, regarded by many as the greatest tap dancer of his generation, and one who transcended the stage. Born in New York City, Hines parents started him and his brother Maurice dancing at an early age and in no time they were studying with choreographer Henry Le Tang. Together with their father the three were known as "The Hines Kids", then as "The Hines Brothers", and lastly in 1963 "Hines, Hines and Dad".

In the 70's, Hines formed the jazz-rock band Severance, serving as songwriter, singer, and guitarist. In 1986 he recorded a memorable duet with the late Luther Vandross titled "There's Nothing Better Than Love". That duet appeared on the 1987 Epic released album "Gregory Hines", which also included the single "That Girl Wants To Dance With Me". He earned Tony Award nominations for Eubie!, Comin' Uptown and Sophisticated Ladies. He won a 1992 Tony for the musical Jelly's Last Jam and a Tony in 1977 for Eubie!.
Hines appeared in such movies as The Cotton Club, White Nights, Running Scared, Tap, A Rage In Harlem, Renaissance Man, Waiting To Exhale, The Preacher's Wife, and Bojangles. He was credited for partial filmography in Echo Of Murder, Santa Baby!, The Red Sneakers, and Seven Days, Seven Workouts (an exercise DVD/Video).
In 1997, Hines starred in his own television series called The Gregory Hines Show, as well as in a recurring role as Ben Doucette on Will and Grace. He won a Daytime Emmy Award for his voice performance as Big Bill in Bill Cosby's animated TV series "Little Bill", and NAACP Image Awards for Bojangles and Running Scared.
