Even as the tension builds, it is an easy and enjoyable read that continually rolls towards its climax and does not trip over itself, which is too often the great mistake of new writers. An extraordinary debut. One must suspend disbelief to appreciate that it is, in fact, C.S. Johnson's first effort in this genre. The reader is invited for a cursory look at what appears to be an atypical, albeit, dysfunctional family. But that invitee soon finds himself being led down a creaking staircase into the family's cellar, where humanity, with all its fear, betrayal, and madness, is cleverly, and slowly, displayed. All things are not what they seem in this expose of the human soul. The reader will be grateful for the invitation, but hesitant to linger in the company of these well defined, but pained, fictional characters. The excursion will also make him leery about inviting anyone into his own home again.
