___________________________________________________________J ackie Bertone is a respected name in the music business. As one of the industries first call percussionists, he has backed a list of music greats that reads like a who's who of platinum-selling artists. In addition, Jackie records music for film and television and has, himself, acted as musical director on a television variety show. Born and raised in Los Angeles, it soon became obvious that Jackie was musically inclined. As a child, he would walk around the house tapping on everything he could find. Then, at the age of eight his mother bought him a pair of bongos,if only to save wear and tear on the furniture according to Jackie.Growing up to the rhythmic sounds of popular Latin recording stars like Tito Puente, Trini Lopez and Vickie Carr, Jackie Bertone forged a style of play that has remained his signature to this day. As a teenager, even while much younger than his musical peers, he was invited to play with many top local acts. Finally, at the age of nineteen, he landed his first professional gig, with the legendary Tower of Power.Jackie Bertone has covered a lot of musical ground in the more than 20 years since. Perhaps best known for his involvement with the Beach Boys (he appears on their platinum-selling album Stars and Stripes, Volume I, he has also remained a constant through much of Brian Wilson's solo career (he appears on Brian's history-making effort Imagination. Indeed, at this writing, he is currently in studio working on Brian's latest effort. Jackie also performs with The Wilsons (formerly Wilson-Phillips). Jackie Bertone's long history with the Beach Boys family is only part of the story. He has also performed with Michael McDonald, Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Buffet, Kenny G and world-renowned reggae group Third World (recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in Music). He also performs on the gold-selling album by reggae masters Big Mountain (Baby I Love Your Way) When he's not on stage with some of the worlds top acts, you can find him in the studio recording sound tracks for movies like, Waterworld and Gladiator to name a few.Jackie was also featured in a MTV music video by Sony Music artist Krayzie Bone (Bone Thugs & Harmony) Thug Mentality as well as the A&E Biography installment on Brian Wilson and the Disney special The Beach Boys Nashville Sounds. Jackie Bertone was also featured in the innovative A&E special HD Planet. Performed live in Chicago, HD Planet, was a unique collaboration between Chicago radio legend Steve Dahl (WCKG-FM) and award-winning television journalist Bill Kurtis. It combined state-of-the-art High Definition (HD) video of nature and travel with a live music performance by renowned musicians, including Grammy Award winning performers Joe Walsh and Christopher Cross.Jackie's career has taken him around the world. From small venues in remote locales to performing with Third World in front of 100,000 people as part of Spain 100-year anniversary, Jackie has had a remarkable career. Indeed, he was the most viewed percussionist in the world in 1994 (140+ million people) when legendary Hawaiian singer/song writer Henry Kapono and the Governor of Hawaii invited him to perform at The Rose Parade on the lead float for the State of Hawaii.Jackie's notoriety didn't escape the notice of corporate sponsors. Currently, Jackie has endorsements with 4 of the worlds largest and most respected percussion companies (LP Music Group, Sabian cymbals, Vater drumsticks and Remo percussion) and was also featured in Billboard Magazines publication Music Biz on the Business of Endorsements and Sponsorships.Today, Jackie Bertone faces his most difficult challenge. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in September 1998, Jackie works tirelessly on public education and the search for a cure. A favorite speaker at for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, he not only donates his time but also money earned from his vehicle leasing corporation (www.premierleasinggroup.com) and his custom watch company (www.blinggroup.com)Jackie's outlook? When I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis I had two options, either to shut down or to get pro-active with my disease, I chose the pro-active route. The way I see it, having Multiple Sclerosis, as with life itself, you are faced with roadblocks along the way. It all depends on how you choose to drive your vehicle.Jackie's philosophy? I may have Multiple Sclerosis, it DOESN'T have me!_________________________________________________________ __I have been a studio and touring percussionist for the past 20 years specializing in the styles of R&B, Funk, Latin, Latin Jazz, Fusion, New Age, Country and all ethnic percussion. Please find below a partial listing of the artist and/or groups that I have been associated with both recording and/or touring.Brian Wilson, Paulinho Da Costa (World Famous Percussionist), Joe Walsh (Eagles), Timothy B. Background By UltimateMyspace ____________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________Si nce he was 8 years old, Jackie Bertone of Federation of Musicans Union - Local 47 (Los Angeles) has always tapped out rhythms. He started, as many drummers do, on table tops and pots and pans, until he discovered the bongo drums. Bertone was such a ferocious learner, you probably wouldn't have wanted to lend him your records - he had a reputation for ruining them, playing them many times over to learn the percussion grooves. All that practice and worn-out vinyl paid off, though for Bertone has build a solid reputation as a professional percussionist. He is also a successful businessman, as well as advocate for those, like himself, who are living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).Thanks to his constant practice and dedication, Bertone landed a gig playing with Tower of Power in 1979. At his very first solo, he recalls, he was amazed at how excited he could make the audience, introducing them to a percussion style like that of legendary Paulinho Da Costa percussionist Bertone emulated.Aside from his live work, Bertone has been a session musician since age 19, joining the Federation of Musicans Union in 1985. He has continued to work as a studio musician for 20 years and has played with some top names in music. "It's amazing to have a lineage with The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson," Bertone says, looking back on one of his more high profile gigs.Like Da Costa, Bertone describes himself as "not a busy player." "I listen for where the percussion needs to be thin and that's what I do," he explains. This unassuming yet complex style is what drew music's biggest names to Bertone. "I was given a chance on the Wilsons' album, Imagination; a chance I would've normally not had," he says.Aside from his union membership, another help for Bertone's career has been his endorsements. However, he doesn't like to use his endorsements as just a way to get free stuff. "I'm not looking for free gear," he says. "In fact, I already had all the latest LP equipment when I approached them." All the acclaimed drummer was looking for when he approached percussion companies like Vater, Sabian, Real Feel, and Remo back in 1997 was respect." I wanted to get my name and face in more places to promote myself," Bertone recalls, "I wanted to be widely recognized."Bertone has received exposure through his endorsements. "You have to build the foundation for a house, and I've done the same with my career." Bertone says, adding that the relationship he has with each company he endorses is rewarding, thanks to clear dialog between company and artist. "Let the companies know your performing schedule," Bertone stresses, "and earn their respect. Have an honest and open relationship with them. And let them know you're constantly working and what you're up to." As he knows from experience, you will be rewarded if the endorsing company knows you are a hardworking profession and a good ambassador for your instrument."If Bertone receives from the percussion manufacturers, he gives back in the form of his advocacy for MS survivors. Since his diagnosis in 1998, Bertone has spoken at many MS symposiums. "If a can open doors with my voice and music, and get people laughing at an MS symposium, instead of focusing on their problems, it's a good thing," he says. Bertone has done well despite his MS, thanks in part to the flexibility and strength that drumming gives his muscles. In fact, he hasn't let MS slow him down or dampen his joy of playing whatsoever. Bertone speaks to conference audiences about the future, and finds it quite rewarding. "I'm blessed to make music and will only rest when I retire," he says.Used with permission by the Federation of Musicans Union - Local 47Background By UltimateMyspace
