About Me

At 24, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Jamaal Sawyer plays with a recognized maturity that belies his age. A veteran of the New York jazz scene, Jamaal has performed with recognized heavyweights Bobby Watson and Barry Harris as well as unsung giants David Schnitter, Bill Saxton, and Valery Ponomarev. Jamaal began his musical education in Kansas City, where he spent three years under the tutelage of Mr. Watson at the University of Missouri. In 2004, he decided to make the move east to New York. There he completed his education, studying with a who's who of the jazz world including Gary Bartz, Greg Osby, and Greg Tardy.
Jamaal can be seen and heard in a variety of locales in NYC including Sweet Rhythm, Crash Mansion, the Knitting Factory, the Garage, S.O.B.s and the Blue Note. He is currently a member of Evil Giraffes on Mars, a rock-fusion group, Chicken Gravy, an instrumental soul/funk ensemble, and can be heard on Sony Japan J-Pop recording artist JuJu's latest album "Wonderful Life", as well as her Christmas single "Wish for snow/...Xmas story".
