Recording. A way of life.

About Me

Gadgetbox Studios in Santa Cruz, CA is a "chock full o' vibe" studio ready to deliver the goods for recording music of all types. Let's face it, home studios are all over the place, you probably already have one, or someone in your band has one, or you may have a sister's cousin's boyfriend who has one. Is the ubiquitous recording studio of yesteryear- the kind that recorded great rock n roll from it's inception- still a necessary part of the future of music?
Maybe so, maybe not. For certain, things are changing. The DIY movement has made it possible for bands and musicians to capture their music at will. Two turntables and a microphone is slowly turning into 'my laptop and a microphone', and the end is nowhere in sight. Musicians are slowly being introduced to all the tools they need to create and capture music on their own.
With the amount of music that is traded and available for trade growing every day, you ask how you can get your music to stand apart from the rest? The answer lies in the recording.
A good recording CAN set your music apart from the rest, because it shows people you CARE about your sound, and you CARE about the production of your music. From rock to punk, funk and all that junk, you will find that by adding an experienced engineer with a great set of tools to your sound, you will undoubtedly improve the sound, appeal, and overall impact of your music.
If your band wanted a screaming sax solo over some cool changes, you wouldn't go get a saxophone and try it yourself? Sure you can make some noise on a sax, but do you think you'd get the tone, sound, feel, and notes that you wanted? Recording is no different- an engineer specializes in hearing your sounds and capturing them in an artistic and creative way, using the right tools for the right job. The right engineer will listen to you and know what tools to use to being out the sound you are looking for. An engineer gives you an unbiased listen to your band and helps shape the sound of your music so that it can listened to easily, without distraction.
Without a doubt, one of the biggest steps you can take for your future as a band is to find a good engineer with a good studio, and record your tunes. By freeing your mind from the recording process so that everyone in the band can concentrate on one thing- the music- you will have a better time, you will have less stress, and the outcome will be a significant step in your music's future.

Band Members: Andy Zenczak- owner/engineer/head chef of Gadgetbox Studios. Andy got started recording at age 7, where he was found telling his parents to 'keep it down' as he leaned his cassette tape recorder and microphone out of the driver's side window and recorded the entire first STAR WARS movie through the cheesy speaker at a New Jersey Drive-in. Since then, he has designed and built/help build three recording studios from scratch, worked closely with instrument and gear manufacturers learning about design, and chalked up more 60 hour weeks in the studio than he'd be able to approximate. His passion for recording is sincere- although he has a decade of experience playing in bands and playing live for audiences of all sorts, his focus has clearly been on the music of the recorded sound, where reality and perception come to an artistic crossroads.

FROM THE MIXING DESK: Epicure Notes

Hell yes. It's time. Hey y'all. We'll give this a shot. Rather than chasing everyone down by phone, I'll keep some notes on here. As I start a new tune in the mixing process, I'll post some idea...
