About Me

The dictionary says:
riffraff: "Un-savory people in our society. People you do not want to be associated with" - haha fucking summed us up what!
At *riffraff we want to give you good fucking music! As well as bringing you the artists at the forefront of our eclectic style of music we are actively encouraging fresh talent from the underground scene as the only way forward for dance music after its development has been stunted for so long by easy formula clubbing. We want to inject the risk and the excitement of the new back into having a good time!
The main aim of *riffraff is to provide a cutting edge house music party where having a good time is the focus and not the money. Its not unusual to see lampshade's, cusions and top hats being warn by pirates, OAP's, Batman & Robin and people covered in boot polish. Randomnes is never dull!
*riffraff's bookings see pioneers of modern house music like SLAM and Peace Division grace the DJ booth while still keeping the underground element with the best underground artists like Chloe Harris or Burnski headlining the month after. Combine these with our four skilled residents and we have the perfect blend....if we do say so ourselves.
Our unique mixture of forward thinking music, low fidelity promo and general fucking lunacy allows us to set ourselves from the other club nights where the music is stale and the door prices are high. We employ a punk philosophy when it comes to promotion with word of mouth being our biggest weapon.
With the aditional madness of our 6a.m afterparty every month *riffraff is taking the underground scene forward in middlesbrough!

The DJ's

Paul Bowen
Paul Bowen started out in 98, playing in local bars and clubs he is known for his progressive, tribal and minimal grooves. Energetic behined the decks, you can really tell Paul Loves what he’s doing. Between his residency at *riffraff Paul is playing around Europe at events in Croatia, Switzerland, Scotland and Ibiza as well as guest appearances around the UK. Paul has played with artists such as Tim Sheridan, Kasey Taylor and Cass&Mangan. Paul is having huge success in the studio producing under both riffraff (working with Lee Pennington) and his own name. His track “less is more” was played on radio1’s show “in new DJ’s we trust” and is gathering support from the likes of Justin Drake (Peace Division) and Mistress De Funk. Recently his track "I'll show you house" reached No18 on the worlds leading dance music download store Beatport. Paul’s other productions are being supported by the likes of Hernan Catteneo, Anthony Pappa and John Graham (Quivver).

Lee Pennington
Over the last few years Lee has fast become a respected producer of underground house music under his Section 75 and riffraff aliases. He now has tracks available on many independent labels that are supported by the likes of, Hernan Catteneo, Nick Warren, Steve Lawler, John Digweed, Scott Bradford, Paul Van Dyk and many more A list Djs. Lee’s track “the PT project” reached No. 6 in the DJ Mag chart (Sept 07) and is being talked about across the UK and the USA. With the imminent release of his remix of Perc’s “ice-cream for Kenton” and his track “Bad Habits” feat. Dan Diamond getting rave reviews there is still much more to come from maestro. As well as his resident DJ duties at *riffraff, Lee has managed to get out and about across Europe playing his own brand of progressive house to the masses. As well as completing a tour of the USA where he played nine gigs in twelve days, he has played with DJ’s like Clive Henry (DC10), Matt Tolfrey and Rockey (xpress2) and now hosts his own show on Proton radio alongside one half of KVK, Mr Sean McCllelan.

Gow
Gow first broke onto the Teesside DJ scene at the turn of the millenium firmly establishing himself at various club nights across the region, playing his own type of house music that people wanted to hear. In 2005 when he discovered a new up and coming underground event (*riffraff) and handed Lee Pennington a mix CD. From that moment on Gow was brought on board as the 3rd resident DJ. It wasn't just his DJ skills that caught Lee's attention but also his quirky productions. After spending time in the studio the pair soon discovered a cross over sound that resulted in records being signed to New York City label Digiprana Sounds. From there Gow's own solo productions have been played by the likes of James Talk and more recently Audiojack, and he has just had a new E.P signed to the flame recordings. On his resident duties Gow has played all over, including Shove @ Paradox in Switzerland and the *riffraff parties in Ibiza. During these dates he has played with the likes of SLAM, Audiojack and Bigger than Jesus. Gow's unique style captures peoples attention and is the third sound of *riffraff.

James Barnsley
James Barnsley is the newest member of the *riffraff family. After playing *riffraff in 2007 and the *rr team seeing him playing in his other residencies, it was an easy decision to get James on board. Keeping his style fresh and interesting with Deep, Techy house music, there is never a lack of energy on the dance floor. His skills have seen him play high profile gigs such as, We Love @ Space – Ibiza, and "River Bar" for Club Class - London. 2006 saw James venture into the studio and his most recent track 'Acid Tambarine' (made with production partner Burnski) is gaining interest from major record labels as well as tearing the roof off at Back to Basics in Leeds where James also holds a residency. In his years on the scene James has played with a countless number of the worlds top DJ's and acts. James has made quite a stir recently gaining support from numerous A-list DJ's like Mark Farina. James' latest project 'Whalebow' is the new basics after hours @ the mint club. As well as running the night he is also one of the residents and can be found smashing it in most Sunday mornings.

The Promotors

Dan
The riffraff promoter. You may recognise this handsome loser from any parties you have been to. He usually likes to dress in womens clothes with a cushion on his head and teach people the way of the scrinse. It was at an afterparty whilst looking at a forest of plastic trees that Lee Pennington asked Dan to become promoter for the ever growing carnage of *riffraff. When Dan found out that promoting the night resulted in getting spandau ballet’d every weekend and telling people about the *riffraff events, he decided there and then that he was up for the task. He pulled on a pink dressing gown and some rubber gloves (not forgetting the cushion) and immediately got to work. Dan can sometimes go missing for days on end so if any of you find him, lost at one of your partys then please remind him of who he is and bring him home safely... If thats in Ibiza, we will reimburse you on the flight.

Gandalf
Gandalf the party wizard can be seen at most events dancing around checking everyone is having a good time. He sometimes answers to Graeme, Gray, or Gra, depending on his mood. He first came along as a *riffraff fan but soon established himself as a vital asset to the nuthouse when he realised Gow, Pennington and Bowen couldn't count or spell or do most things at the end of the *riffraff evening (This infection is contagious at most *riffraff events so be careful). He handles most enquiries about *riffraff and is in charge of the sale of tickets and merchandise as well as other duties that the DJ's can't do due to their limited number of brain cells. If you see him please stroke his hair, it’s lovely and soft and is worth it.
