Hi, I'm lead vocalist with death/thrash outfit "Colcothar" hailing from the Ghent/Deinze region, East-Flanders, Belgium. I joined the band in april 2004, if my memory serves me correctly. Basically i'm playing in bands since i was about 16, so that's half my life-span already. Played in numerous bands, different styles as well. Always the "harder" stuff, though. The first band i was in, i did the bass and vocals. We played some kind of chaotic, grind punk, as we all couldn't play for shit. We rehearsed in a shed in the middle of nowhere, well, basically in redneck county. We never did any gigs, neither and after our guitarist got married he "decided" to quit as his wife wouldn't let him. Stupid cunt. Well, they're divorced now and he's a downhill alcoholic. My second band was around 18-19. I was living alone and i met some guys needing a bassist which was fine by me! It was my first "real" band, i.e. we recorded something (back then it was just demo-tapes, but hey...whatever) and we did (wow!) gigs. Our first gig was in the north of Germany, 900 kilometers from home. We got there in a beat-up, rusty Renault, crammed with four people and cases of beer. It took us two days... The concert was one of the most chaotic events i ever witnessed, people crawling on stage, falling off and bashing their skulls in. Some guy slit his wrist during the concert. All in all we had to stop 3 times due to ambulances arriving and taking people with 'em. I loved it! On the way back, my other band-mates forgot me so i had to make it back to Belgium on my own. We lasted some years then we split up. Forgot the reason. I continued playing bass by myself. Then one night all my gear got stolen. It was then that i decided to do the vocals. It was the cheapest thing to do. Some time later i hooked up with some people who wanted to start a band too. We didn't have a real idea of the music we wanted to play, so on our first rehearsal, our guitarist played something and we all followed. It was some kind of punk/crust. It sounded very natural, 'cuz actually it was the only kind of music we were capable of playing. We existed for six years, in the meantime releasing two 7" and one 12". Hey, it was punk so it had to be vinyl. We did numerous gigs and quite some tours around Europe, too. One time we ended up in Poland during winter. I never was so cold in my whole life!! Lots of stories to tell here...maybe later i will. After six years we called it quits. By this time our guitarist evolved from a pathetic, drooling drunk to an even more pathetic total abstainer. Actually, his doctor wouldn't let him and from then on it went downhill pretty fast. Take a man away from the booze and he starts to wallow in self-contempt quite easily. This was also the first time i realised that being in a band can become tedious, as well. Also because we weren't all that close anymore and the goals we set ourselves in the beginning were now just naive. Anyway, time to move on! I answered an ad in the local newspaper. Some guys wanted to play power metal/thrash and they were looking for a vocalist, so i phoned them. went to do audition and it was just fine. That's when i came to realize that my hoarse and throaty style of "singing" just wouldn't do for a metal band, so that's when i started to take singing-lessons (which i still do...sometimes). For me, playing in a melodic, well-played (metal) band was probably one of the hardest things i ever did in my life. I mean, man vocal-lines were just hard and i often felt disappointed and sorry because i fucked up my lines again. I had to say that taking lessons worked out pretty fine, though, and i would recommend it to everyone taking singing seriously. It's still difficult but it's getting better. Okay to cut a long story short, we split up (again). In the meantime i started playing with Colcothar. Being death/thrash metal as it is, i think i finally found a band where i'm feeling comfortable in. It's fun to play, to rehearse and do gigs and i manage quite fine, thank you! I feel the changes when i start evolving lyrically, musically and in terms of vocal capabilities. I guess we'll start recording (a second cd) soon. Do some more gigs...i'll keep y'all informed.More info about the band is to be found on: WWW.COLCOTHAR.BECOLCOTHAR: STANFORD PRISONBy popular demand coming soon:I created my own profile using nUCLEArcENTURy.COM and you should too! ..
