World On A String was formed in 2002 by violinist Bjarke Falgren, guitarist John Sund, bassist Morten Lundsby and percussionist Ole Theill.
The music of WOAS is a mix of various styles, but in the hands of these musicians, it transforms into one. When listening carefully, one can easily trace origins of Indian, Balkan and Irish music mixed with a touch of jazz and blues. First and foremost we are dealing with a band that plays original music and has its own style and sound.
The musicians are all a vital part of the Danish music scene and all members have toured worldwide in various contexts. These are the kind of musicians who refuse to be concerned about what label you would attach to their style, because the style of their music is difficult to describe - it is as if there really doesn’t exist a fitting label, and what does the term “World/Fusion†tell you anyway? But that doesn’t imply that their music is difficult to listen to, on the contrary, the bands stage present always capture its audience and their performances is often “unpredictable†in the sense that, they are so together as an ensemble that when working in the moment, the music can take them “anywhere†together! Creation in the moment one could call it. A World On A String concert will never sound the same twice.
The members of the band have worked and works with artists such as: Palle Mikkelborg, Creme Fraiche, Mariam Mursal, Ganesh and Kumaresh, Van Morrison, Danish Radio Big Band, Cæcilie Nordby, Bo Stief, NHØP Quartet, Bombay Hotel and many more.
In 2004 their debut CD was released to rave reviews and the following year it was nominated by the “Danish Jazz Awards†in the category “Best cross-over CD of the yearâ€. Here follows some excerpts from various critics:
“They have to the greatest extent "found each other" and together they raise the music to a higher level, which as I hear it, reaches far beyond the actual notes and melodies, we hear. Exactly therefore, WORLD ON A STRING will hold up to repeated listeningâ€.
Peter Rahbek, Jazz Special, August 2004.
†This quartet performs with an open "free flow" and the joy of playing is constantly present. The music on this CD is an adventure for the listener beyond the average.â€
Torsten Eckerman, “Jazz Lifeâ€.
“This is a group of musicians who really master their instruments…â€
Categorized as “Top of World†in Danish world magazine “Djembe†by critic Jack Donen.
“The four successful, however very individual musicians have accomplished an achievement already on their first recording – consisting of ten original compositions, sounding like a long tested ensemble, with such perfect ensemble playing, it is as if they can read each other blindfolded...â€
